kitchen piece by the box/stick rates …

JeffBuck | Posted in Business on July 17, 2004 07:03am

I’m gonna go back and see what my “that’ll take about” estimating rates break down to “by the box” numbers … if possible …

I was hoping someone that prices by the box and/or by the stick could tell me aprox what “the going rates” using those numbers are for their area … I can do a ballpark translation to my area … Pittsburgh.

we’re talking higher end stuff … semi-custom usually … labor only.

I’m curious how my previous pricing stacks up … I know I’ll be on the higher end of things … just curious to see if I can figure out what my “by the box” prices would have been.

The thought just crossed my mind last week to give this a shot. Don’t have plans to change whats been working … but if the numbers float and make some sorta sense … it might help me ballpark until the big plan review/walk thru ….

anyone have any “by the box” numbers …

and how do trim sticks fit in there? extras or included?

I always assumed filler pieces were added as one cab box …

what about crown and under cab/light rail moulding? by the foot?

for some reason .. the number $40/box rings a bell? Did I just make that up or does that sound reasonable … haven’t gotten far enough to work that out yet.

Appreciate any info you have to share … the more the better as far as making the conversion to my “that’ll take about a day” method.

Thanks,

Jeff

At $40 a box I would want a vertical panel saw in the shop....

Heh, heh, I want a vertical panel saw in the shop anyway, but I ain't got one yet....

I usually do the boxes by the hour; doors I quote flat price per door.  K-Pine raised panel doors, cope and stick, materials included, I do for between $60 and $75, depending on size and quantity. Minimum is 10 doors for the low end of that range.

    Installation--and any extras--by the hour...of course.

installation is what I'm talking about ...

sorry about writting all that mess and not saying that.

how about 2 panel saws ... one in the shop ... and one strapped to the side of a box van?

      Think about it ......

I seem to recall my P.H. boss saying some thing about 1 hour per piece, sticks and boxes.

there are usually some pieces that go in in no time and some pieces that require some extra fussin.

Just adjust up or down depending on whether it looks like more or less fussin.

I try to use 75.00 per box/piece for install.  Each piece of crown, toe kick, filler, etc. is also counted as a piece.

No way I'm gonna spend my time searching for invisible off-layout studs that may not even be there on a flat-rate basis. Just isn't worth it.

The main reason I don't have a panel saw in the shop is there ain't no more friggin room in there! And on that second panel saw--first I gotta get a cube or a 20' Wells Cargo....

For a few jobs in the less desirable suburbs of Boston we paid a sub $10 square/foot no base/trim/extras included on a job about a year ago. He charged that per footage on the uppers and lowers, did a couple oak ones for us and a bunch of low end MDF stuff. He'd make alot of his money when someone added on extras that he priced much higher and he could do while completing the install or punchlist, that'd way he'd rackup $400-800 of extras every time he punchlisted.
