I’ve got a gas range / stove with a clearance issue. This is a brand new device 31″ wide that has the auto ignition feature on the burners (thus no pilot light).
I’m knocking out the cabinets that will contain the SS (exterior)vented hood. I’ve cut the vent in the wall and sided around it long ago.
The question is : What is the height over the stove for this vent? I’m all over the map in my sources of information.
The owners manual says 30″, after reviewing the posts, “Bob” (of our site) says 24″ for a non combustable surface.
Before I work for a long time making a mistake, could someone give me some feedback please.

IMO, the hood ought to be high enough that the tallest user won't bump his head on it. If that means it has to be wider and deeper to capture all the fumes, make it wider and deeper. Nobody should have to duck and dodge in his own kitchen. The hood over my stove is only 18 or 19 inches above the stove surface, and I just hate it.
Since the exterior vent is in place I'm looking at 24" or so. easily. the problem in my mind is the 30" by the owners manual. That seems excessive.Jack of all trades and master of none - you got a problem with that?
Do what the manual says. 30" isn't too bad. Around here, the code minimum is 24 inches. My hood is at 24" and it's a bit cramped plus smoke tries to go around it from the front burners. If the manual says you can go higher than 30 and you can make it fit, it would be even better.
after it get's set at 24" ... because that looks better ...
and there's a fire ....
who's gonna have a good reason why the manual stated 30" wasn't used?
me ... I go by the book .....

I'm siding with you on the 30".
As much of a pain in the dupa as it will be to deal with the venting it seems right. The convincing part of this is I was ruminating the height in my kitchen at home when I looked at my own Microwave over stove in the kitchen. ... I made it 30 inches there, and it works.
I'm just coming to the final wrapup of this never ending cottage project. All of the stupid problems of vent too low, "oh jeeze I forgot to run power to it, etc are comiing to light. It seems no matter how much you plan there is always some little issue that one forgets.I wish the vent hood was the only area I forgot about. Rework takes far more time than doing it right the first time. I'm still working on being omniscient...I think.
Thanks for the come-uppance. Who else but your buds to tell you you've got a cranial-rectal inversion.

Depends on how far it comes out. 24" that only comes out to 18" from the wall is prob ok. If its a real hood and comes out 24" then 30" is the number...

Go with what the specs say for the stove/range. This is what the testing has rated it for. I have worked in some cities(Newport Beach, Ca.) where the building inspector actually check the specs for the range and made the general contractor raise the hood and removed some combustable "foo-foo" trim from around the hood. Some ranges will even specify the depth of the upper cabinets that are on both sides of the hood
Depends on what kind of vent you have. I installed my SS Broan Allure II at 18" from the top of my gas stove. The light enclosure at the front of the unit is over 20" from the top. Pokes out from the rest of the unit. Works just fine and captures the smoke well.
I've got cabs flanking the vent which I put 22 ga 304 brushed stainless on the bottom, along with a stainless backsplash. Sure makes clean up a snap.
