I am planning to remodel my kichen. I have a few questions. Is there any benefit in laying the tile first? should the tile be layed under the cabinets? Under the island? My second question concerns the electric. I have seen a coupleof houses where they did not want to break up the look of the backsplash with outlets, so they ran an outlet to the bottom of the upper cabinet. Opinions? Finally, electric in the island. The island is quite large, 4’x9.5′. The ends are curved wood cabinets. I really don’t want to put in electric because I think that it would ruin the beauty of the cabinet. What is the code for installation of electric here? No appliances in the island, just storage, and a small sink. Thanks

Tile first, under the cabs to a point well beyond where you know the tile will be covered, then some sort of spacer beyond to support the cabinet backs, dishwasher, etc.
Electrric outlets facing down is not a good idea, as the plugs can work loose too easily, plus its harder to insert the plugs (safely).
Dunno about code for the island -- I suspect that code calls for outlets, though.
It's your kitchen
If you don't want outlets in the island, don't.
You need permits & inspection for a remod in your own home?
You might put the backsplash outlets just under the cabs so they're semi hidden, facing down seems a poor idea to me.

You want to have the outlets where one can easily get to them. That means putting them on the wall above the backsplash. If this kitchen is like most, there will be plenty of "stuff" on the countertop to mask the outlets. The clean pristine look will only last for one or two days at most. You will not see the wall outlets after a while.
I believe that code will require you to have outlets in the island. We did a small peninsula in our last kitchen and didn't want an outlet that was noticeable. I put it inside the cabinet, out of sight, and installed a grommet into the counter top to lead the cord out. This grommet fit flush with the top. I custom made mine, but there are many great looking grommets for sale. Try http://www.mockett.com as a good source.
I agree with doing the floor prior to installing cabinets.
