Old ceramic knob and tube insulators, do they have any value?
Possible uses or recycle?
Have tried the dog chain, making a pipe etc.
Thanks!

cutting edge hones....
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming
WOW!!! What a Ride!
Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
We used to use the tubes as tuna lures. Have caught some in the 40 - 50 pound class on them. We always fished them on 30 or 50 pound class gear. Red skirts have also produced a fair number of wahoo.
Same idea as a cedar plug. Twist a 9/0 sea demon hook to #9 or #10 leader wire, thread the long end of the leader through the tube from the straight end. Hook bend will seat at the end of the tube. Add a small plastic skirt at the nose (enlarge the leader hole a bit by trimming to let air into the tube) and troll on the face of the second, third or forth wake wave back.
Better lure action can be obtained by using 125 lb monofilament as opposed to wire, but you need to inspect the leaders frequently due to chafing from the ceramic tube.
Boat speed should make the tube just skim on the surface of the water, air will enter the tube occasionally and produce a nice bubble trail. Rounded head of the tube and the asymmetrical hook bend makes for a nice erratic track. They should be on the surface 90% of the time with an occasional dive or hop out of the water. Play with line length and boat speed to produce the desired action.
Don't worry about trolling too fast - a tuna can catch up!
Keep drag settings low (20% of breaking test), trolling speed is relatively high as is the speed of the striking tuna.
You know you have a bite when it looks like someone dropped a grenade in your wake and line is screaming off the reel.
Some people have used them as a sort of sharpening "steel" - I only had fair results with this.
Don't know what to do with the knobs.
Jim
there real good at throwing at pairee dogs
Thanks, I'll ask a fisherman friend, at the very least he'll take the 5 gallon bucket
5 gallon buckets are typically worth their wieght in gold on a fish dock! ;=)
JimNever underestimate the value of a sharp pencil or good light.
With a small metal screen inserted, the tubes work well for, ahem, smoking materials.

wind chimes. string several together and hang several strands in the door jamb and you have a privacy screen for your pipe smoking room. donate them to your local art institute.
Thanks Miko, best yet
Hope he doesn't have the guard pinned back on his skillsaw
Also would make a smokestack for model train.
I believe they would sell on eBay.
They add to the junk already in my garage. I chuck 'em. Same way with the pig iron sash weights of the old double hung windows I replace. I don't leave them in the cavity anymore because I foam insulate. I'm sure they could be used for something.
A friend of mine uses the old sash wieghts to help hold down tarps. ties them on the eyelets.
Might help hold down winter cover on above ground pools
I used one with a rope and pulley for a gate closer.
I have four I use for canoe anchorsI have 2 more in the garage I am going to use on a rope and pulley for my shoulder rehab Can think of many other usesSorry about the hijack
I use old sash weights as hurricane/tornado chimes: When you here those rascals tinkling, you know you're f****d!Knob and tube? I've used the tubes as handles at the end of old iron floor-lamp pull chains. But most folks just use 'em as sex toys.AitchKay
>>... the pig iron sash weights of the old double hung windows....<<
Hmmm, Bucks County could be a bit far away.....
But, if you get down to the Chesapeake Bay, or have a nieghbor that does..
Cast iron sash weights are the preferred anchors for use at the ends of a crab trotline on the Bay.
Generally 2 weights on each end of the line. The tapered cylindrical shape resists getting hung up on the bottom, and they are heavy enough to do the job.
You might be able to do a little trading with one of the trotline boats.
ID'ing a trotline boat = generally fairly small (25-35'), plywood roof over the back deck, steering stick and engine controls at the rail on starboard side, will have a bracket or mount ahead of the stick for the line roller --- the real tip off is the blue plastic barrels on the deck which store the trotline in brine when not in use.
Some weights might be worth a few dozen nice crabs.
Fishermen, especially commercial fishermen, are very creative in the use of other people's junk.

I'm in San Francisco right now. Maybe the tubes would sell well at one of these cannabis clubs. The Woodshed Tavern Backroom

The knobs work well on cabinets. Attached picture is from a basement door into a room under our porch. Previous owner installed it who knows how many decades ago. Went through it a few times until I realized the knob wasn't originally from a door.
