Yeah, yeah… I know the general consensus regarding lowes.
However– 7 month old banged up, beat to sh*t, muddy and generally abused Porter Cable compressor. Hooked her up to the generator this morning and the smoke just started to pour out!
LOML called Lowe’s — “Sure, just bring it in, no problem.”
1 hour later I was back on the job happily banging away with my brand spankin’ new compressor purring happily in the background.
When they say a no-hassle return problem, they mean it.
EDIT* ummm. To clarify. We always keep our receipts and owners manuals. I wouldn’t try to return something to my mother without a receipt. That’s just common sense. Wait, isn’t that somebody’s tag line… “Sense is not at all common.”

As long as it ain't the water heater that I bought from them. Got it home, unpacked it, and found that the warranty is only from Whirlpool. Didn't say that anywhere in the store.

Don't be tellin me that now..I just put in a Whirlpool from Lowes..9 yr. warranty.
Man, they make a report to the State..had to fill out a form with either a Plumbers license or permit # to get the warranty..and my County building Dept. gets a copy...yikes.
I don't have a permit..or a Plumbers License..I'd rather eat the warranty then give in to that crap..it's only a water heater for god sake.
Wassup with that?

Tell us again, why did you move to Kentucky? <G>
None of that nonsense here. I called Whirlpool as the directions looked like I was going to be stuck for shipping the damn thing to them. They laughed and said "no". I hope so. Sprung for significant more cash to get a no time limit warranty. My experience with Whirlpool corp. is excellent, but it's been awhile. My first time buying extended warranty on anything. Hoping for the best.
Oops, that's wrong. Bought a no time limit warranty car battery from Penny's a long time ago. Probably wasn't the best decision either.
The other problem I had was with the Whirlpool electronic control. Didn't/doesn't work with my heat pump water heater. Jury-rigged it last summer. When the next place is ready, the Whirlpool stays here and the heat pump gets hooked to somebody else's (non-electronic control) heater.
Water heaters used to last a long time. Don't seem to anymore. That's why I bought the warranty. Not likely I will again. PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
Tom, I had a buddy with a 65 Mustang he bought new. Bought a Penny lifetime batt and probably had it replaced 6 times last I saw him.
Penny sold the warranty service to Firestone I think, somebody was still covering them for Penny's 10 years ago.
But, yes, you do need the receipt. Which was no prob for this guy, he had the receipt for the anything he had bought since 1950.

That's amazing. My battery went to a scrap yard when my Italian buggy lost an argument with an F250, resulting in it being dragged backwards up a Denver street with the bumper guards hooked well under the Ford. Fortunately it was unoccupied.PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!

Here in LA theoretically you're supposed to have a permit to install or replace a W/H. But they don't have any link with the box stores.
So, what can go wrong with a DIY water heater job?
1. No T&P valve, or T&P plugged or routed to who knows what. Result: Steam explosion.
2. Gas leak. Result: Gas explosion.
3. Heater in the garage without the 18" platform. Result: Gasoline or paint thinner explosion/fire.
4. Heater not strapped/braced for earthquake. Result: In a quake, the heater falls over, breaks the gas line, starts a fire and a flood, the place burns down because the fire department is too busy with higher priorities. This has happened to houses that had only minor damage other than the water heater fire.
5. No Smitty pan. Result: Water damage.
6. Mistakes hooking up the water lines. Result: Water damage. (And usually the kind that breaks completely in the middle of the night.)
7. Insufficient combustion air/venting. Result: Carbon monoxide poisoning.
That's just a few, please do add to the list if you think of more.
For those reasons, I'm willing to pay the $43 for the permit and inspection so long as the goofs next door do it too. I'd like to see HD and Lowe's reporting water heater sales to LADBS.

HA HA Sucker. I bought a water heater for one of my bosses houses a while back. I was kind of sweating the app. thing. The guy at the hardware store (who I kind of know) Handed me the app. and said"I'm supposed to have you fill this out. Of course I don't know you, or if your writing down the wrong name or address on this. All I have to do is turn it in and the Frankfort mails it to the local inspector, if he can't locate you or the address then I guess he can't inspect it can he?" Then he gave me a big wink and walked away for a minute.Who Dares Wins.
For most things now the warranty is not handled by the store you bought it from. Usually it is the manufacturer that handles warranty problems.
However there are exceptions.
I thought the lowes were made by rheem and HD made by GE (or whoever GE subs too.
amazing the consumer has very little info available to make a choice
how did whirlpool handle it?

Hasn't come up yet. Only into the second year of use. I called them to clarify the warranty. Was assured I didn't have to return it to them. Hope I wasn't lied to.
Oh, it seems these heaters were manufactured solely for Lowe's. Which doesn't sound like a recommendation to me.PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
consumers do not know too much about the quality of water heaters. not much factual info available
one company sells only one model, the longer warranty model is the same as the shorter warranty model - you just are buying a warranty with $$.
same tank

That's what I figured when I bought it. Although the efficiency ratings were better with more bucks. Not normally an extended warranty purchaser, something came over me.PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
BTW, I am fairly certain that Whirlpool does not make them.
That they are made by one of major brands of WH to Lowes?Whirlpool's spec and that Whirlpool is only the marketing arm.

Wouldn't surprise me a bit. But when I called the number they answered "Whirlpool". Which is who I'll be dealing with when there's a warranty issue.PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!

Not nessecarily.
First the company that answered the phone might have not have been either Whirlpool or Rhemes.
It might have been an outsourced customer service company.
And who you would deal with if you had a warranty issue would really depend on what the contracts where between Lowes, Rhemes, and Whirlpool.
Whirlpool might have only licensed the use of there name.

Thanks. You've done an excellent job of convincing me I should have taken it back. Or I could call and ask the clerk what their paycheck says on it.
Given all these possible scenarios, do you think it really makes any difference?PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
"do you think it really makes any difference?"
Not really.
There only case where it would matter is if it blew up and killed everyone for 10 miles around.
Then Whirlpool, Lowes, Rhemes, the company that ansered the customer service line, the truck driver that delivered it to the store, and the waitress that served him coffee at the truck stop would all be sued.
Between Whirlpool and Lowes they are both well "respected" business and if there is a problem will take care if. Maybe not "easily".
But that a letter to the corporate offices will usually solve those problems.
I bought a senco compressor from Lowe's. Used it sparingly for 6 months. One morning it wouldn't start. After checking everything I knew about I returned it to Lowe's. They would not fix or return it. Talked to person from tool section , he told me they didn't sell Senco compressors. I bought it in this particular store, didn't have receipt. Talked to manager, got nowhere. Called Senco, tech told me what problem was, bad condenser. I went to nearest authorized Senco dealer, they had to order part. Make a long story short, they never order the part. Called Senco again, part was delivered next day Fed Ex, free of charge.I do not shop at Lowe's anymore. I can understand not replacing a six month old tool without a receipt, what got me was telling me they never sold this compressor.

Kudoes for them not knowing that you ran the thing off a generator!
That'll kill a comp. faster than using it for an anchor on weekends.
