Hi all,
I’m planning out the stairs for our small new construction home in Wisconsin. I’ve read the code requirements for Wisconsin online in regards to stairs with a focus on winder staircase. What I have gathered so far is that..
-Minimum width of 36 inches
-Max riser height of 8 inches
-Minimum riser depth of 9 inches
-Winder depth of 7 inches measured at 12 inches from the narrow end
-Depth of adjoining thread shall be equal at a point of 12 inches from narrow end.
My question is can the narrow end come to a point? I was unable to find any specifics to Wisconsin Uniform Building code given specifics on requirements of the narrow end. From a Fine Homebuilding article titled “Building an L Shaped Stair”, I’d like to build a stair that has the 36”x36” corner section as three equal steps, but this requires the narrow end of the step to come to a point which I don’t know if this is allowed.

It can come to a point. I don’t think code cares too much about what is happening on that part of the stairs because it’s too small for your feet. It’s that 7” 12” in from the end that’s the key. Just my two cents if you have the room for two more steps skip the winder. Winders work but they are not the easiest to navigate or do things like move furniture up and down. A nice 36x36 platform is a lot easier to walk on especially as you get older. Good luck.
