| Posted in General Discussion on February 5, 1999 09:24am

I once saw a staircase that looked like a ladder, or was it a ladder that worked like a staircase? Anyway, if you know where I can get a plan for one of these, or even a picture so I can fiquire out how to build one I would be greatful. When I saw it I new that some day I would build one If only I kept the picture. Thanks

Bessler Stairway Company makes a one piece sliding stairway. is this what you're thinking of? http://www.bessler.com

*Thanks Brian I checked out the Bessler site but it is not a pull down ladder that I am looking for. The picture I remember (I think it was in FHB) was actully a bookcase that you could climb like a ladder, but each foot goes onto a different hight thread.

*Rockler Hardware has a bookcase ladder that runs on a rail both top and bottom. Is that what you're looking for? I used to have a catalog with the hardware for such a ladder only, as Rockler only sells completed ladders for about $900.

Rick, was the ladder/staircase you saw a design which had alternating/staggered treads on either side of a central member? If so, be cautious of code compliance, liabilities, and inability to sell "as is". In a nutshell, it's cute, but dangerous.
    Trying to help, Steve

    Hi Folks,

These stairs are and aren't dangerous.

One has to start on the same foot every time.
It is actually easier and safer to navigate, if you are familiar with it.

The un-safe part is having it in a high traffic area for un-initiated guests.

Willibald Manne's book 'Designing Staircases'(Van Nostrand Reinhold Company) has drawings and pictures of various versions of this.
The easiest to build has two stringers with treads that are alternately cut back about 1/3 to 1/2 of the tread depth.
Check it out at your library.

    Good health, Weogo

    Hi Rick,

Don't know where or when I got it.

    Mine is a 1982 edition.

    Library of Congress #80-21145

    ISBN # 0-442-22578-4

Wish I had a scanner to send you copies of the pages.

    Good health, Weogo
