I have a serious mess I discovered over the weekend of a notched beam and lack of supporting studs. I’m going to clean it up this weekend, but the end goal is to open up the room even more. The engineer stamped drawing calls for a W10x22 steel beam with lally columns. So where I have 3 studs now (technically 1 due which is why its messy) will be replaced by a lally column.
I want to just replace the studs with a lally column now (I’m assuming this will make it easier in the future) – can I buy different flanges to “swap out” to fit the differing widths – right now the beam is 4×12 so the W10x22 would be way wider. Does it even matter and the beam’s flange can just overhang the lally column’s cap?

Yes, the beam's flange can be wider than the lally column's end plate. Just make sure that you actually connect everything together and not just rely on gravity to hold the lally column in place under the beam.
