Before putting down any laminate flooring over an existing sub-floor the sub-floor needs to be flat right? How flat is flat, 1/4″, 1/8″ 1/64″? And then how do I get the sub-fllor that way?

casey, depressions are more of a concern than long sweeping crowns. If you have a pc of the flooring, take it around the areas in question and lay it down, even stepping on it. If the flooring depresses readily, you should correct that area. Continued flexing could break the glue joint along with feeling cheaper than that stimulated wood does anyway. We have used "Dependable" floor leveler to feather out depressions and quick up/downs. An occasion arose where an installer placed some dry sand under the cpl planks that had a void under them. The pad makes up little distance but this is a floating floor. Drastic change and low spots are what you should concentrate on. Best of luck.
