Check out a little remodeling roof framing thing, or at least my hallucination of how it might be done.
Existing house with 12:12 pitch cathedral roof, glulam structural ridge, project is to do a large shed-up off one side to gain some second floor space.
Existing rafters are 2x12s, and have little teenie birdsmouths cut into them. Each rafter pair butts. Where the new shed roof goes, the 12-pitch rafters are going bye-bye on that side.
The new 5:12 pitch shed roof is to join in right up at the existing ridge line, so we have a condition due to the pitch change whereby the shed rafters cannot bear on the ridge, but need what I am calling “ridge jack” blocks, 2×6 shorts mitered appropriately, on which the shed rafters can bear. See the pics.
Furthermore, I saw no need for a plumb cut at the ridge for these new shed roof rafters . . . we’ll just keep the upper ends square, lap them to the mating 12:12s going down the other face, and everything will be cool.
Anybody want to offer a time saving easier way? Please?

2x8 blocking ripped down, installed between existing rafter pairs. Plumb cut not necessary.
