I bought a Topcon (don't remember the model #), for about $800 a year ago. It's got a range of about 150' radius, and it's very accurate.

For grade work and such, we always used a David White. The newest model, a David White 900 looks to be very much similar to our older unit that we used.
The 900 claims to be accurate within +/- 1/16th at 100 feet and has a range of 1500 feet diameter. Our older model was accurate to +/- 1/4 inch at 100 feet, but had the same range.
It was very easy to use and always worked well in the field in all sorts of weather.
I see where Tool Crib has the 900 for sale at $1,099.....we paid roughly the same amount for ours which we purchased back in 96.
