David White’s Mark 4 PL? It’s self-leveling, has 5 dots and a laser chalkline so seems like might be very versatile laser. I see one on line new for 99$
I want to stick it on a pole for interior carpentry tasks, and possibly use it outside for deck/fence stuff. Bright/accurate enough for that?
Any thoughts?

I have one and it is definitely handy inside. The laser line it projects is quite wide - meaning it'll reach from one end of a room to the next. I bought it primarily for the plumb laser function because my rotary laser's don't do that quite as well. Great for pulling out when the rotary is too much trouble - easy to make a little ledge to hang it on the wall at any height.
I'm not sure how useful it would be outside... Maybe as the sun is going down or before it comes around that side of the house.
You might be better served with a rotary type - I found a brand new Porter Cable 5150k auto leveling unit on Ebay for about $233 (new about $450). Doesn't matter how bright it is outside as you can use a detector upto a 300' or so radius.
I still have my Dewalt rotary - loved it - very handy, but when I found the deal on the PC I decided to upgrade. The dewalt is manually leveled via two bubble levels - very easy and quick.
If you are interested in a slightly used Dewalt kit, let me know - it's the kit with all the accessories - laser detector, wall mount, glasses, target, etc. Takes 3 D batts - they probably last close to a year in it I'd bet.
Great unit and it was very reasonably priced. I'd sell the whole setup for $200 shipped, comes with a killer kit box.
Here's the item:

Julian,
Thanks much for the info.
I will consider the laser.
Yours that is,
Pat
Let me know if I can answer any questions for you. Also, I was just estimating the highest I thought the shipping would be. Depending on where you live - it could be cheaper.JT
Are you sure about that price?
Sounds more like a Mark 2.
Lowes has the 4pl for about $188. The Mark 2 is about $99.I bought the 4pl used in great shape on ebay for $56 and it's super handy to have around. I was thinking that the Mark 2 might be handy but then I 'd have too many lasers floating around.JT
It is the Mark 4 PL not the 2.
One seller had 6 or 8 for purchases (not auction) @ 99$
I don't know if any are left from him. I should get off my a$$ and just click the button, but I'm thrifty (read "stingy" and after the best deal) so perhaps I'll watch some others and hope to win an auction for much less...
Thanks guys,
Pat
There's another six avialable @ 99$ ea. from that same seller... Free shipping too.
