I have an exterior door that’s 3-1/4″ thick and would like to put a “regular” door knob on it. I’ve looked around quite a bit and it appears that the limit is 2-1/4″. Note that I do not want a lock (key or otherwise), just the latch/knob set. Any help would be appreciated.

I built a garden gate out of double 2x4. So I ended up with a 3" thickness. Never did find a door knob that would fit this thickness. I finally countersunk one side of the handle into the door. Hope someone else will have a better idea.

Have you tried a locksmith and see what they suggest.
I would look for one that uses a square shaft. Then if you can get a longer shaft, make one.
Then either use very long screws for the handle brackets or possilbe screw then in the door.
Look at it as 3 separate parts. The plunger with a shaft and then two knobs.
That's what I was thinking, a mortise set with square shaft and replace the shaft.

I believe Sun Valley Bronze (http://www.svbronze.com) has ones that will fit -- and they're gorgeous too. But if you have to ask how much, you might not be able to afford them.
