This is an island we just finished in Kasilof. Lighting wasn’t so good so pics aren’t either. Green and red marble processed on-site. Underbid.

Prescriptive codes don't address the connection at less common angles, so base the connection off more typical ones using bolts, structural screws, blocking, and steel tension ties.

Pretty tight looking job! But...what's that on the post? Don't tell me you didn't protect the posts from staining from the pour. Let's see, rough sawn DF posts and terrazzo staining. Good look getting that out. Good looking job though.
*The whole post thing was a bit of a surprise but they are wrapping them with some kind of copper sheathing.
*Matt, you know, as I was typing out last night's post I was thinking that perhaps some decorative metal sheathing might look good on those posts. It would fit in with the design. So, if the posts were a surprise are you saying that they are not loadbearing? If they are only decorative you could always cut off the bottoms of each post--tweak it slightly out of the way when fitting the slab--and seat them home in a shallow mortise cut tight to fit the post.I did that once with a granite slab, worked beautifully.
*Hey Rich- The posts must not be load bearing but we got some conflicting reports about that from the General's foreman and the homeowners. If they are load bearing then someone made a big mistake when sizing that beam. Maybe they realized they needed to pick up that load and instead of putting one post in the center of the room they went with two to mimimize the weird look. Homeowners say it is needed, builder says not. I like your idea and I am not sure what they plan to do about trimming the posts at the floor. I think they are just going to run tile around it and then go with the copper. But now that I think about it finishing the copper at the countertop is going to be a little wierd. I think the homeowners wanted some posts in there for some reason then changed their minds once they saw them in place and then convinced themselves that somehow they needed to be there. The act of building a house is quite an exercise in psychology. Thanks for the advice. Got some pics?
*Matt, I agree on the neat use of terrazo, and the nice work. I've always loved the floors, but that counter top is the first I've ever seen. If you don't mind, what do you get per linear foot(or however you charge) without posts?
*Hey Buck- This particular project has two marble aggreate colors and we charged $100/sq.ft and add the edging square footage into the bid. The posts on this particular job weren't really that big of a deal to form and pour around but they added to the square footage of the project in order to get around them. We don't have all that many people in our area that can afford that price so we just ate that 10 extra feet in order to keep the job alive.
