I read with interest the item on Laundry chutes in this month’s FH. My problem is a little more unique. I want to intall a chute in an existing unused chimney. Does anyone know if this is possible or feasible? It’s in the perfect place since it runs through my bathroom to the basement. I was thinking of trying to retrofit it with a duct lining, but can’t figure out how to do it. Thanks.

Remove the chimney!
*Ah yes, the easy approach. You could run a liner down, but that costs money and you'd have to penetrate the side of the chimney anyway. Better to remove the chimney (not that difficult, just tedious ... I've heard (want to do mine...), seal the roof, and use the chase for whatever you want. Other than heating ducts and returns, I'd like to run a laundry chute up the chase. And add fire blocking at regular intervals -- right now you can look all the way up to the roof from the furnace. Whoosh!
