I'm sure some do, but it's wrong. For a damp area such as a bathroom you have to use a concrete backer board of some type to do a good job.
There are a lot of particulars to getting a long lasting tile job. If you are new to it I suggest getting one or two good books. The book Setting Tile by Byrne, sold here by Taunton is one excellent one.
You can use Ditra (Schluter) membrane over plywood subfloor and Kerdi over drywall in the shower. Minimum subfloor thickness is 1 1/16".
Next month I'm doing my first Schluter bath, the concept of not having to cut/carry cement board is just too attractive when working in a 4th floor walk up.
The awful thing is that beauty is mysterious as well as terrible. God and the devil are fighting there, and the battlefield is the heart of man.
