we use 36inch deep but check your equipment. specs
leave enough room for the dryer duct transition and the washing machine hoses will take care of themselves
for width we use 6 ft inside with a 5 ft bi-fold door.. and you have to dismount the door to get the equip. in and out.....
*Don't forget to account for plumbing, wiring, ducts, etc in walls, ceiling, and floors when doing this. In a remodel I was doing last summer we shifted dryer brands and ended up with a round-robin vent job to match the existing hole because there was no other option. It works and is safe. But it could have been more efficient.
*Just finished one Dan so its fresh in my mind! We went 6'wide I 36" deep also with a bi-fold door... and it came to install, the 5' bi-fold just cleared the dryer door. Looks great but I have to admit I was sweating a bit. You see I installed a washing machine pan at rough-in which took up more room than just the washer, and like I said I was sweating it as I opened the dryer door. As the other guys said the dryer duct should be well planned out when roughing in the closet.Mark
*Give lot's of thought to dryer vent location. My builder placed it approx. 2" off floor at approx. center of dryer. This was mistake. New dryer is offset by 3.5" and distance between ducts (depth) is barely enough to double bend the flex duct. My suggestion is to place outlet near the floor in the middle of closet (or just to the dryer side of middle) and plan on two low clearance elbows (Home Depot) and short length of flex duct. If you try to line up with existing unit you will probably have trouble in future. My new Sears Kenmore (Whirlpool) has recessed area at back that facilitates routing duct from center to the left side of dryer. Therefore, for minimum back clearance plan on dryer on right, washer on left (when looking into closet).
