Hi all
These are 2 bay windows that I did last month.
We first framed them & covered them with plywood then put on the wood core roll and then covered it with sheet lead. We also used lead for the facia….
Lead sheed one side of hip………….
other hip…………….
You can see the lead facia in this photo with 2 inch strips welded on, these strips fold back over the lead sheet that comes down over it………………..
Overview of lead sheet at hip………………
Completed lead bay roof…………………
You can see the strips folded back up in this photo……………..
The house was built right on the end of a cliff over the sea, you can see a pier below with a fishing boat………… could have done with a handrail around the scaffolding!!!..
This is a photo of a valley beiing slated from a different job…………
This is at the top of the valley, one side is already slated……………………

These are a few photos of a quarter round roof I did last year, This is the very top of the roof. I couldnt get a finished photo of the job because the scaffolding was in the way and I havent been back since. The rafters were very long, 26 feet if I remember correctly.........................

Great stuff in this thread and the other one too. You could be the new BT Roof King.
Thanks very much for your kind words. I had all these photos for a while now but only got the chance today to upload them. It was worth giving up my Sunday for but I dont think my wife would agree!

David,
Walter be the man!
Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
That's loyalty! Respect must be earned! ;-)

Walter is the Man, has always been the Man, and will always be the Man. So is CU. But our Man from across the pond is welding lead. You can't F with that. There'll have to be more than one pair of pants worn.

as a side note----and NOT to detract from the poster( super cool projects BTW !)
lead burning is actually pretty common in the USA---- you just don't encounter it much in the world of building construction.
most any electro plating shop----in particular chrome plating---specifically industrial hard chrome plating----will have guys fully able to handle an astounding variety of lead burning/fabrication.
i am 45 this month---in my early 20's I spent 5-1/2 years as a hard chrome electro plater-----all the anodes used to chrome plate industrial tooling, plastic injection molds, rubber molds, tool and die work etc were formed from lead.
my standard work week was about 50 hours----approx. 15 hours per week was spent building anodes/lead burning.- ALL of the owners' shop time was spent building anodes/lead burning----and approx. half of the foremans time as well.
almost every project we plated needed lead anodes fabricated specifically for that project.
again---absolutely NOT to detract from Emmet---- but all the lead work he showed would have been at the simple end of what we fabricated. If I had not spentthe time working in a chrome shop I would NEVER have known actually how common lead burning is in the USA.
As a shout out to Emmet---------- if you are having a hard time finding people who can do the lead work for you----you might try hiring some younger guys away from the electro plating industry( assuming you have one there)--- it's a VERY lowpaying job(electro plating)----and one where you work dailey with unbelievably nasty chemicals( I went into roofing eventually because it was cleaner and safer,LOL)---------------frankly--at the time I would have taken a pay cut to leave electro plating and work for an outfit like yours---- just a thought
Best wishes, love the pictures-

Are you required to get blood lead levels tested when working with that material?
Does that lead get etched at all from rain? Do the local authorities have concerns about lead runoff?
On this side of the pond, some get freaked about the material. Others seem to know better.
Thank for the questions.
I am required by law to get all my employees who work with lead to get tested every 6 months.
There is no issues with lead in this country regarding run off. we put patination oil on the lead to stop it staining or run off.
Lead is used on every house over here for flashing, Copper is very seldom used, only on architectural buildings or high end housing for a different look.
As regarding the lead welding only about 10 contractors can do it. I learned from my Dad.
Great looking work! I very seldom encounter lead in any new work
around here. How long does it take for you to do one of the bay
window roofs (lead work only)? I've got a circular roof drip edge
that needs doing, now that Piffin has resolved my environmental
concerns maybe I'll do it in lead.

Yeah, just rollin' that same rock big ol'up the hill
Forrest
And then running down the hill after it. I wish (sigh) I was working
by the hour.

Pete, I asked the question about lead runoff when I took a class on lead remeditation several years ago.The instrucctor said not too worry. The begin with, the amt that is washed off is infinitesssimally small. Secoind, since it is a heavy metal, it woill not moe more than an inch or two through the soil, so unless you are planting your tomatoes right there under the dripline and eating them by the bushel, you will not ingest enough to count, and third, this form will not be present as a dust in the air to be inhaled.
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
Appreciate the answer.
NICE! That's only the 3rd or 4th lead roof I've seen.
Mongo.
That's nice work. Real nice! And I love what you're doing,,, but, I cannot believe that it is a good idea to introduce more lead into the watershed. Isn't there a huge mattell or ? recall on kids toys that might conatain paint with lead?
I hope these large jobs don't rely on well water,, but I can't remeber why!
Anyway ,, cool work,, just had to rant a little eco rant. For what it's worth!

Kids will be chewing on those Mattel toys where as I doubt that any will be up there gnawing at the roof!
Doug
O.K. I'm not an expert here,, but up in Canada here,, they've banned lead fishing sinkers, and I think lead shotgun shot as well. They've also banned lead solder in plumbing pipes. I'm not wanting to be a bad guy, just curious if this lead might contaminate rainwater, on down threw soil, and into the aquifer.
I deal with accumulations of various toxins in my Environmentally sensitive clients, and was just curious.
I love the work,, BTW.,, very cool!

Its a horse thing!
Man, what a coincidence. We were discussing your castle project at the fest and wondering where you'd been.
Very nice work - thanks for sharing it.
