how long does it usually take to build a new construction home? I feel our build is extremely long.

One day to years - need specifics.
Some actuals: Say 3000 sqft house
Just you and your wife 100% DIY (with 2 small kids plus working full time day job to pay the bills) - about 2 years
HFH blitz build (after concrete set) less than one day.
King co WA and many other places, at least 6 months (or more) just waiting for the permits.
After permits, 1600 sq ft ADU old retired 70 YO working 6 hrs a day by himself with some grandkid 'help' - 6 months.
GC who sees you as a cash cow? as long as they can stretch it out if on a T&M basis.
We are having the home built, 1989 sq ft. Builders contract says 180 days after they break ground, it will be 8 months. They are saying “weather” delays, but no work on house 8 of the last 10 days, this is not including weekends, as our builder does not work weekends. The roof is on, so I am not understanding why there is no work being done.

you are building at the height of a new construction boom. subcontractors, the heart of a builder, are extremely busy right now.
What would that have to do with their contract?
nothing, but builder's write up contracts to favor them. this includes delays by subs, weather, etc.
