Yay, a corresponding forum to the new magazine! And nobody is here yet. Mark, I think the first order of business should be to solicit names for this forum, because let’s face it ‘house chat’ is a bit on the boring side, no?
Other than that, I can’t wait for this forum to get going. Even though I haven’t signed up for the magazine yet (but I definitely will).
Edited to say: and beige? Did it really have to be beige? I mean, what is inspiring about beige? 🙁 Sorry to be whining.

Hey, Tessa, Mark........
What da heck is dis?
There's a new magazine? I have to get out more......
I don't know if men are going to show up someplace called "chat," are they?"Our whole American way of life is a great war of ideas, and librarians are the arms dealers selling weapons to both sides."-James Quinn
Probably not!
But then again, I thought it was about a talking house...Peace

Yes The Taunton Press is now publishing Inspired House. Our latest publication. Its always exciting to have a new product come out especially one that has such a buzz about it.

Everything here is so BLANK. So, instead of beige, how about purple? Instead of House Chat (and for those of us who read too fast this looked like a discussion of pets), how about just plain 'Inspirations'. Or even 'Whole 9 Yards', since the new mag covers everything including gardening and sewing, giving us 2 puns for the price of one?
Gatherings is purplish already. The only color that isn't taken is yellow, but I'm not sure that that works well visually unless it's darker, and then you get into Orange. Which is taken by Knots.
I did notice that none of the board colors are really a straightforward version of that color. The red of Cooks Talk is burgundy-ish, the blue of Breaktime is teal-ish, and the purple of Gatherings is, well, I don't know what to call it but it's not a straight purple. I wonder if that was a conscious decision (probably) and why that is.
I do like Inspirations.
There's no fuschia. Or, it could be more of a hunter green or forest green. Or turquoise. Jade? Indigo?AnnL; MotherHen/Hobby Farmer
How about persimmon? Or puce. Does anyone really know what puce is? Here, we are "Inspired," we can design our own scheme!

How about "Wall Talk" as in, "If these walls could talk..."?? The color doesn't bother me, but then again, I am a guy!
There is a new magazine? And no one told us? Mark...what diss here about?
I am house hunting, selling and painting.

Hey Mark, we had lunch just last week and you didn't tell me about the house cat or the new mag. Holdin' out on me, man? Wooops, that's House Chat. Well, we did walk out to the car to meet the Azul cat.

Sorry BJ its just that there is so much going on here these days that I have trouble keeping track of it all myself. We weren't hiding anything we have had the Inspired House site live for a while now. Next time we do lunch I'll be sure to give you the inside scoop on everything we are doing...;)
We just got our copies here on Wed. the new issue looks great! Be sure to Subscribe!... And don't forget to tell all of your friends, family and anyone you meet about Inspired House!
P.S. It was nice to meet the famous Azul!SYSOPForumhelp@taunton.com
I don't like the word "chat" because it implies, well, chat rooms or shallow conversation. Of course THAT isn't what we do here, it it?;)
How about just House Talk? Or House Files. Or About the House. Or....
oops, I meant to ALL, but hi anyway, full-fledged!
Edited 10/2/2003 2:49:00 PM ET by Jo
We could have a folder for rants named House Grouse, or Castle Hassle."Our whole American way of life is a great war of ideas, and librarians are the arms dealers selling weapons to both sides."-James Quinn
Cute! Or Home Groan.
I don't care what you call it (These Walls Talk!) but what is non-intuitive to me is the placement of these chat areas. They should be right underneath the corresponding magazine in the banner IMO. Where you put Tool Talk, I don't know. Regardless, I am looking forward to your new publication.
HIya Jo!

Open House sounds good....will there be food? Gotta have food. Do we get to decorate seasonly too?

hey, there's a folder named "The Hearth." Is that where Taunton wants our Ipke-like threads to go? Maybe I'll go find out.Sent my "yup, send it to me" card today.
Where's this bad biege and even worse curtains? I'm so confuuused. There's a new mag?

Most of the "house" magazines I see, show and write about huge houses with huge rooms, huge furniture and huge yards. I wish someone would concentrate on the "regular" size rooms, etc. I know there are many of us who live in smaller homes, apartments, townhouses, etc. I live in a TH and would love to talk about new designs, paints, dividers from kitchen to living room etc.
Rip,
That is more along the lines of what Inspired House is all about. Sarah Susanka Author of The Not so big House is one of the contributing editors for IH magazine. So you will see a good amount of that type of information within the pages of Inspired House. We just got the first issue and it looks great!
-MarkSYSOPForumhelp@taunton.com
More on the name ideas ('cause House Chat could really use something better)...
If gardeners talk Over The Fence and builders talk during BreakTime, wouldn't homeonwers talk on the Front Porch or maybe in the Living Room??
playing in the dirt in beautiful East Tennessee, zone 6B
Steve, my preference is to talk at the kitchen table. But then I have no porch to speak of.
Since I moved in, the kitchen is the only room I've gotten around to repainting. And I still haven't finished. Boy do I need this magazine.
Good ideas, Steve.
yeah per normal, drat the boy. ;-)Nothing valuable can be lost by taking time - Abe Lincoln.

"Gardening is the only unquestionably useful job." - G.B. Shaw
Yeeees! Speech! (al least until Sysop comes by). OK, here is a dummy question to fill the time while waiting for the big change. What does Sysop stand for? I never had the nerve to ask before, but it will be interesting to hear the truth.
Sysop=System Operator. He's the one that's responsible for the technology that keeps these forums running. He installs the software, configures it, resolves problems, installs updates, works with Prospero on fixes and enhancements, etc. He's da man! :-)
AnnL; MotherHen/Hobby Farmer
Why not S.O. then? Is there an IT person or is this one and the same?
Well, I don't work for Taunton, so I shouldn't be jumping in here, but, what the heck. Mark could be I.T., it depends on the size of the company and how they define the different responsibilities. IT is usually the person who is responsible for the computer equipment used BY it's employees. So, I am a computer programmer, but I work on the equipment that my company's customers use, the equipment we sell. When my laptop has a problem or if I need the latest virus update, I go to the IT department.
So, Mark could be part of the IT department, he could be the whole IT department, or might not have anything to do with IT. Clear as mud, eh? ;-)
I'm sure Mark will come along at some point and answer your questions. AnnL; MotherHen/Hobby Farmer
So Ann, are you saying that Mark has *IT*? or is he the *IT guy* for our generation?
Eroom, the term Sysop goes back a long ways, certainly predating Taunton's online presence. If we called him our S.O., our significant others might want to know what we're doing here-- especially if our sysop is the *IT* guy.
Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. We can't give out any clues! :-)
O.K. since you asked heres the explanation:
SYSOP is systems operator as Anne pointed out. This was a handle that our old forums used for the person in charge of the forums. These Prospero forums use another term which I didn't really like so when we changed I kept the SYSOP handle. What is my job hmmm that's a tough one to answer, No I do not work for IT (although sometimes I feel like I do) I work for Taunton New Media and although we work very closely with the IT department we are separate groups. We design the look and feel and build all the pages and communicate with our Taunton customers. They build the "back end" of the site, the behind the scenes stuff that users don't see but that make the site functional. My background is in Photography and Graphics I worked for Tauntons Prepress department for 15 years doing the Color work for the magazines until I became a Web geek. So when I cam over to the web some of my early responsibilities where making the graphics for our website look the best they could but then one day someone went on vacation and said can you "watch" the forums while I am out so I said sure and when they returned the forums stayed my responsibility that's how I came to be SYSOP.
As far as the forums go we work with the different interest areas to make the forums work but the decisions about things like Colors names and the rest are made by the interest area that "owns" the forums. For instance Inspired House Magazine owns House Chat. So any changes to names color etc are made by them and their design folks although we can recommend certain things we leave it up to them to make the final decisions as it is their forum. But when there is problems it is me here in New Media that works with Prospero to make things right.
So there you have it the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth! At least for the most part...
Mark (AKA SYSOP) Not the "IT" guy...SYSOPForumhelp@taunton.com
color, eh? Could you go and give the FC folks some help?? Their reds and greens have been off now for about a year. ;-)Nothing valuable can be lost by taking time - Abe Lincoln.
Well I would like to say its because I left the prepress group but that was more than a year ago...

You know you can "subscribe risk free" if you want. You can do so from the Inspired House web page. They'll send you an issue and a bill. You then pay the bill if you like it or cancel it if you don't.

I just subscribed! You know what that means, then. Also, will I be getting the first issue or do I have to buy it at the stand? What was or is the cut-off for the first issue being sent?
I believe that your subscription should start with the premier issue but I will go check to confirm that. -MSYSOPForumhelp@taunton.com
Well I just checked and yes you will receive the premiere issue and also become a charter subscriber by starting with issue #1. It looks like subs will start with issue #1 for some time to come. We will post on the IH web site when that changes.SYSOPForumhelp@taunton.com
That is fabulous! Charter member and one of the charter users of the new forum. Tessa beat us to the first charter user. I wasn't really sure about which issue, or how long I would have to wait for it, because the information said that they would send me the "next" issue. Thanks, Mark!
Now, Ruth, I really don't mind sharing the, I mean, "our" IT man.
Thank you very much, SYSOP. That is very interesting. The real truth is very enlightening. This site is very nice! We all appreciate everything you do. Thanks, Mark.

I agree, the beige has to go. That's one of my biggest complaints when I look at pics of houses in design magazines--everyone decorates in shades of beige/brown/tan and it's all so blah looking. I can understand not wanting lots of color, but at least a little bit!
