Could someone experienced in doing so please enlighten me on how to level out a dumpy level of the type that has three (not 4) leveling screws under the instrument. My only experience has been with the 4 screw type, and, while I can fumble around and get the 3-screw instrument leveled, I know there has to be a standardized, streamlined way to get it done. The owners manual is no help at all. Thanks in advance for all advice.

Use a calibrated Mark-I eyeball or torpedo level to set the tripod table close to level. . . Set all adjusting screws to midpoint of travel.
Set the sight tube parallel to two screws and adjust the third. Rotate the tube 120 degrees and repeat. Do the last screw the same. . . Repeat the whole procedure 2 or 3 times to fine tune. . . Takes about 90 seconds.
