I read a story in yesterday's paper that I thought was interesting. It seems that a contractor is being sued by a deceased woman's family. The contractor was doing some renovation work for a woman, and had a certain carpenter on his crew that worked this job. It turns out that the carpenter is an ex-felon with a history of violent crime. At some point the carpenter is left alone in the house with the owner and he brutally rapes, beats and kills the woman.
The carpenter is now in jail for a very long time. Justice apparently served. Now the family sues the contractor. Now sure of the specific cause, but I am guessing something like failure to take reasonable precautions to insure her safety.
So what do you all think?
Should the contractor have done a background check, or asked if he were a felon on his application?
What are your hiring practices?
Any ex-felons on your crew?
How often do you leave employees alone in customers houses? Is theft a concern?
Are there any circumstances under which you think the contractor is liable?
