I just climbed up on my roof for spring inspection and to clean the maple whirlybirds out of the gutters. I find that on half of my white shingled roof, there are numerous lichens growing. At least that’s the kind of thing that they resemble. When I pulled one up, the shingle grit underneath was deteriorating. This is the northeast side of the house, of course. The roof is not terribly shaded. I don’t live in a woods, just a neighborhood with a few silver maples. What can I do to control this growth?

Get some deer up there.
This has been discussed before, but you probably have some moss too? There are zinc treatments and zinc strips for treating the moss don't know if it works on lichens but look into those.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming<!----><!----><!---->

Wasn't thinking too clear on that was I?
Ya, could never understand how those could eat away the granules like that
or else they are just growing into them and thats what takes 'em off.

You could try this product for long term control.

As Zinc leaches off the strip it controls the lichen or mildew.
You didn't mention what kind of roof it is.
You can do a search on amazon for moss killer or moss control.
When i tried to order some of the products from my lumber yard they were told that they were banned for enviromental reasons.
If it is an asphalt roof then I think bleach would kill the lichen.
If the granules are coming up with the lichen then I think maybe you have problems.
