Light sanding of urethaned floor

I haev a hardwood floor that I sanded/finished 5 years ago. I have been doing a lot of work in the room and have scratched the floor (probably just the urethane – I used minwax oil-based clear urethane). Can I just lightly sand the urethane and apply a coat or must I sand down to the wood and start over? Any one tried this shortcut before?
Thanks in advance,
Tom

I've done this shortcut recoat of the hardwood floors in my rentals several times. Same situation where I sanded and finished the floors and then years later they start looking worn out, dull and scratched. I've done the sanding with my 6" random orbit sander with 120 to 150 grit paper and it actually goes pretty fast. You have to be careful not to go thru and make light spots in the stain but otherwise I've never had any problems with the finish. The floors end up looking just like new and seem to be as durable as the original finish.
So far I'm hearing "go for it!". My experience with paint and other finish materials usually shows that fi the foundation is healthy then touching up usually works.
Thanks, Doug!!
Re-coats are about 20% of my business. Be sure that the floor has not been contaminated. If any product with wax has been used on the floor then a re-coat is risky at best. If you suspect contamination, clean the floor with TSP, rinse a couple of times, buff with a maroon pad, vacuum, tack with a wood floor cleaner and re-coat.

Thanks, Ditch!
It will be a lot less work plus it's an 80+ year old narrow-strip oak floor with walnut borders that can probably take only one more sanding. Gotta save that next sanding for a special occasion ;-).

I just want to add that Doug may be working a little harder than needed here. I would sand enough to feather the scratches then just use a drywall pole sander with a 120 to 150 grit screen to scratch and denub the rest of the floor.
Clay, easier sounds better to me.
Thanks for the advice,
Tom
