Lincoln Windows

| Posted in General Discussion on October 15, 2004 11:25am

Has anyone had experience with Lincoln Windows.  I had originally spec’d Kolbe and Kolbe but could save about $3000.00 by switching to Lincoln.  Problem is, i’ve heard different things from different people; some say the Lincoln and the K&K are vitually the same, while others have gone so far as to call the Lincoln’s “substandard.”

Can anyone offer any advice?  I’d appreciate it.

The real Lincoln Window outfit went out of business awhile ago...

I tried to get service for some windows and a door....

You can guess what happen there..

What there status is right now is anybody's guess...

Hmmm....They have an active website and my local dealer in VA certainly sells them.  Are you satisfied with the quality.  Have they performed well?

The may have opened back up....

        Not enough experience to say...

They're not comparable to a K&K, not by any stretch of the imagination. I've had opportunity to see them in new construction and in use. Nothing special at all. I don't know what the pricing looks like, but the only outfit around here that uses them does lots of tract townhomes. Draw whatever conclusion you wish from that.

RW, What's your thoughts on Eagle and Weathershield.  Is there a list  which ranks the windows as far as lower-mid-upper end?

      1. RW | Oct 19, 2004 12:15am | #9

I know squat about weathershield. But Eagle - that just started getting available locally here about a year ago. So it's not flooding the market, but they do some things which are noteworthy. My first thought is they are to me what Norco was a few years ago - inasmuch as the niche they fill, and I think they do it better. Norco was a heck of a deal. Low cost, pretty good quality, you weren't paying for a brand name that was recognised . . . yet.

I've installed both windows and A sliding door and thought each looked pretty well made. The door was heavy for its size, and sturdy. The instructions were clear, the parts fit, everything ran smooth. And the wood was clean, so no FJ garbage showing up when you stain it. So I'll say based on limited experience with Eagle, that from what I've seen, I think they're doing good, the cost is very competitive, and the work is clean. They do have a ton of options, and changing colors with them is a freebie - unlike just about everyone else. "Custom" sizing a unit, also significantly lower percantage wise than, say, Marvin.

As to rankings, that's really subjective, and we're all going to respond according to our own whims, but I'd say loosely, I'd rank quality wise, top to bottom, somewhere in this order: Kolbe, Marvin Ultimate, Eagle, Anderson, Norco, Pella, and now getting real low Caradco and some of the other things you'll typically find for real cheap off the shelf at the box stores. They fill a niche too, it's just depressing that some people waste their money unwittingly on stuff that won't last simply because it costs less."If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man." - Mark Twain

A friend of mine used a lot of them on a big remodel to his own house.......I believe that the double hungs he used were al clad ext wood int. Nice color green.

He made his own mullions for the inside and glued them somehow to the glass.

I thought they were Marvins the first time I looked at them. I have not heard any complaints from him, and he did purchase them on a price point.

Could be lottsa lines within the same brand.

Thanks Firebird.  Many of the negative comments I've heard involve servicing.  We're looking into a Posey (sp.?) Window now which I understand to be of the commesurate price point to Lincoln.  Any experience with Posey?

I seem to remember bad things about Posey.

I'll tell you this though............don't be cheap about your windows. I'm not sure what it is you are trying to achieve but........ur gonna kick urself in the azz for a LLLLOOOONNNNGGGG time if you cheap out on your windows.

Andersons and Marvins are about it for me.

I used Lincoln windows on my house, aluminum clad exterior / pine interior.  Every time I open them I think, damn these are nice windows......

Thanks for the nice comments, Eric. I did post some pictures a year ago. I live in Monroe, Washington about 40 miles NE of Seattle. this link may take you to the original post. I'm building a spec house now, my first job as a contractor. I hope to make a post called "Spec house from heaven" in the next few months. Jim
