I’m putting photos up on a website as we go along, and I’ll repost the link here when I add updates. We have several projects going on at once, but I got started on the bedroom addition part this morning.
Enjoy!

VERY cool !!
Having stayed there for several days, and being good friends with the owners, you can bet I am going to be watching this one !

I added some more photos. You might need to refresh your browser to see the updates if the first view is still in your cache.http://home.surewest.net/dlong1/Web%20Page/INDEX.HTML"A completed home is a listed home."
Lisa,
Thanks for the pictures - it's fun to see a work in progress, especially when I'm not the one living in the mud and mess!
Thank you for the update, and the reminder to look.=0)Look for an email. This is just too cool. For once, I get to live vicariously through someone else. LOLWasn't there some sort of shed or something at the opposite side of the pool from the poolhouse, as well ?Looks like the grass held up to the party !

There wasn't a building there, but there was a big patio cover cabana thing and then a 6' solid fence that ran along the back edge of the old concrete. So it felt like there was a building there, closing off that end of the yard. I have some "before" pool pictures in my non-digital camera. I'll post them when I get the developed and let you know I've updated.I also seperated the updates into links from my main page so you don't have to load all the photos every time, and made the font larger. Thanks for the suggestions, Luka!"A completed home is a listed home."
You are completely welcome.=0)You are picking up that HTML stuff pretty quickly !

Wow Lisa, great pictures! It looks like you are making good progress. The walk-in shower looks huge. How big is it going to be?
Keep the updates coming.
darcy
The shower itself is only about 3' x 6'. The rest is a walkway, slightly sloped, into the shower. We wanted a shower that you could enter without having to step up and over a barrier so when Dave and I are old we can cruise down with our walkers. LOL! Here's the plan for the bathroom:"A completed home is a listed home."
That looks great, Lisa!
It looks like you will have lots of closet space, too. Where will Dave put his stuff?
For those following...Concrete is being poured for footings/slab as I type. I added a photo to the top of the "before" section - our house in 1947.http://home.surewest.net/dlong1/Web%20Page/INDEX.HTML"A completed home is a listed home."
They tore the roof (all four layers) and the sheathing off yesterday. The rain came early this morning. I didn't watch the news last night, but I knew it would rain all the same. The roof is gone - what do you expect?I didn't tarp. I figure most if it will be torn down anyway, right? I did have the foresight to lay the skylight back over the hole in the family room ceiling late yesterday. The water is starting to drip through the sheetrock on the bedroom ceiling now. Pretty soon I'm sure the ceiling will cave in. I better get the last of the stuff out of that room. I did flip the circuit breaker, so don't expect any fires. They say it will be in the 90's by the weekend. But today it's raining. You know, I never realized how much control builders have over the weather. Amazing."A completed home is a listed home."
Wow Lisa! looks like an expensive way to lessen your yard work. Now let's see some action shots of the workers doing their job, or did they all knock off early because of the rain? :-)
Now tell me why you need a closet that big when the average temp there is in the 90's? Don't you guys just wear Speedos most of the time?
I'll bet you are really excited to have a nice big master.
Thanks for sharing the pictures and keep them coming.

Gotta store that Speedo collection somewhere, Bob. LOL!I've got some action shots to post but I've gotta get the film developed first. The digital camera had a little accident last week and it's getting repaired. Oy.Great to hear from you. Remember the "one man" tree deck? The twins are having a wonderful time demolishing it, board by board, with a sledgehammer. I'd recommend the activity to any parent of twin 13 year old boys."A completed home is a listed home."
I'll bet the boys are having a great time doing demo work on that old deck...:-)
So you dropped the camera on the pavement huh? Cameras really don't like being dropped, that's why they have a neck strap......hehehee
Can't wait to see more pictures

Yea, our roof is off too (SF Bay Area) - amazing, isn't it? And the local radio forecaster officially declared the rainy season over 2 weeks ago (of course he was on vacation last week - wimp!).
A number of years ago I helped a friend/landlord take the roof off the house I was renting a room in (Santa Cruz). We waited till the end of June just to be sure - rained for 2 days just after we finished hauing it all to the dump. Next year I had my own place. Getting smart I waited till late July to tear off the roof, rafters, ceiling - absolutely poured for 3 days - just pulled all our belongings into the middle of the floor, threw on the tarp and left.
Hope the damage wasn't too bad, though half an inch can really make a mess!
I added some more photos under June 15 update:
http://home.surewest.net/dlong1/Web%20Page/INDEX.HTMLI'm trying to limit each update to the best 4 or 5 photos. The rain got the sheetrock soggy but that didn't really matter because they have been going crazy with the Sawzalls and sledge hammers. As of today there's nothing much left but the slab. We're on our fourth 20 yard dumpster now, and hoping we don't need another."A completed home is a listed home."
Can you believe you lived with that tiny bedroom for as long as you did ?=0)Just keep reminding yourself of how much bigger everything will be when done. And thanks for the updates. I was beginning to wonder when the next one woud be.
Are we there yet ?
Got tarps?
What is up with this weather, anyway?
Updated today - they're almost done with demolition. Framing starts about Tuesday...be on the lookout for a heat wave soon as they get our roof buttoned back up!http://home.surewest.net/dlong1/Web%20Page/INDEX.HTML"A completed home is a listed home."
Wow, it looks like you're making
good progress!
Tell Dave Happy Father's Day from us.
PS I promise not to tell Cliff...shhh...
Psssst - what goes on in this thread stays in this thread, right? When the sliding door was installed in the pool house, we had to disrupt the wiring that was daisy chained in that wall. Cliff Popejoy, my faithful electrician, is on photo safari in Africa. What to do, what to do? I rewired it myself. And voila - it works! I even added an outdoor outlet and light. Just don't tell Cliff. He won't sleep at night..."A completed home is a listed home."
Love that crime scene tape around the old tree fort.Maybe some of that should be strung around the electrical work at the sliding doors ?; )

Framing went up last week - see the July 5 update:
http://home.surewest.net/dlong1/Web%20Page/INDEX.HTML"A completed home is a listed home."
Oops - my last message was for everyone (Luka included). Cliff was here all weekend doing the electrical rough in. The paper's up on all the exterior walls, and the roof sheathing is almost done. I'll post more photos tomorrow. We also got the first set up shade awnings up out by the pool, and the change is amazing. We surely enjoyed it on the 4th."A completed home is a listed home."
Very cool !!One question...I see two sliding glass doors in the bedroom half of that. There seems to only be room enough to squeeze a twin size bed up into the corner between the two.Whats up with that ? Youse gonna sleep on the floor ?LOLHow about a floor plan, or blueprints er sumptin ???=0)

Sure - a reasonble request! Here's the floor plan:
Edit: the file is plenty big but the plan displays pretty small. Suggestions to make it display bigger are welcome if it's too hard to see.

Excelent, thank you !It reads just fine.I put a queen size bed under that window, and it looks like you'll be squeezing through about two feet of space there at the end of it.Unless you turn the bed sideways and push it up against the wall, instead. No biggie, I just thought it might end up feeling like a kind of funnel sometimes.=0)

Hmmmmm....something's not right on the plans or something, then. Our king size bed is 80" long and it goes just where you show it. So I just went out and measured and we'll have just over 5' from the foot of the bed to the wall, allowing for sheetrock and a headboard. I bet if we think hard enough we could figure out what's off, but my brain is too tired to think any more today. Maybe tomorrow!"A completed home is a listed home."
The problem was in my brain, not yours. LOLThe neasurements on the bed were off.I didn't notice I had given it an extra two feet, because it looked the way I expected it to look.Sorry.

Whew - good thing. Because I wasn't looking forward to figuring out where we got two extra feet. LOL!"A completed home is a listed home."
Sorry.Look on the bright side...At least it wasn't two extra feet -under- the bed. LOL

Update for 7/13 has been added:
http://home.surewest.net/dlong1/Web%20Page/INDEX.HTMLThis is the point where the homeowners start to get a bit weary. It's getting up to 105 degrees today, and with all the holes in the house the air conditioning is having a hard time keeping up. I can't get the house to cool off much below 80 at night, and by 9 a.m. it's already going back up. The pool pump broke a couple of days ago. We got it replaced yesterday, but it will take a couple more days to get the pool clear again. So we're a bit weary. But everyone is doing their job and then some, and the project is going great."A completed home is a listed home."
I have been wondering the last two days when another update would be up there.=0)Looks great !!

Thanks! In the photos I think it kinda looks like a barn. It doesn't in real life, but I can't get the whole setting into a photo very well. The refuse company is due any moment to pick up our fourth 20 yard dumpster; I feel kinda bad about adding that much junk to the landfill! Toby is harvesting all kinds of stuff to build a fort with, so that helps a bit.Everyone's kind of waiting on the roofer now. There are only a handful of people who have been trained by Girard to install this particular metal tile roofing. I have confidence in the guy we're using, but he's working a couple hundred miles south of here until early next week. So we'll spend the waiting time having final grading done, detail cleaning the site, finishing up rough plumbing and electrical details, relocate the skylight, etc. I use the term "we" very loosely - at this point my duties are limited to answering questions, helping with site clean up and writing checks. The work on the twins' bathroom will proceed full steam ahead. Yesterday and today he finished the sewer work and poured concrete, demoed a doorway and framed inside it, framed the wall that will seperate the bathroom from the linen closet, and took out one of the existing windows. I need to get vanities and sinks this weekend, and pick up the toilet. I already have the flooring, the decorative tile and the window. It looks like we're alone here in this topic. That's kinda nice. Want a virgin margarita? (I know you don't drink booze.) My treat."A completed home is a listed home."
That "board and batten"... Is that just t1-11 with battens tacked on ?Lisa, don't worry about the landfill. You are doing a remodel. You are tossing stuff that is mostly only good for the lanfill anyway. Especially since Toby is gleaning the good stuff. LOLThere are people who are tearing down old houses which are full of stuff that is a shame to be wasting. They send it to the landfill without a flinch. Your remodel is nothing in the grand landfill scale. Why is the rest of the work waiting on the roofer ?They can't pour that shower floor unless the roof is finished ? That bathroom work really needed to be done. I can attest to the fact that you couldn't hardly even turn around in there. LOLI'll have a real one. Since it's cyber anyway. LOLEven a real life margarita isn't going to flip the depressive switch all by itself. A couple of them every night, would. Probably the only reason I do not buy red wine and drink a glass every other day or so, for health benefit, is because of the cost. If I noticed a depressive effect, I would have to cut it back even further than that. But I think I would probably be pretty tolerant of that amount.

OK then, one full test virtual margarita coming right up.The siding on the addition is actually plywood siding, rough on one side, with battens over it. The rest of the house is true redwood board and batten that's about 60 years old and hard as a rock. Budget and a desire not to down more redwoods precluded the real thing on the addition, so we're going for the same look. It's pretty convincing. The roofer is out of town working in Fresno on a roof until next week. Then he'll do ours. There just aren't many people trained to install this particular type of roofing. Girard won't even sell it to the public, only to people who are certified to install it, because it's so non-standard. It's certified for 50 years and expected to last about 70, so I'm hoping it's the last roof I'll ever buy. (The rest of the roof is less than 10 years old.)They did pour the shower floor in the addition Tuesday, and are working on little stuff here and there. Yesterday was the first day in weeks that no one from the addition crew was here working. I missed them - they're like family now!I seriously need to make a run to the electrical supplier this morning. Our thermostat died last night so the A/C won't come on. It will be 105 degrees again today, and without A/C I'm afraid the plumber will either go home or will die on the job. This is the third digital thermostat we've had die in 5 years; I'm going to get a simple, mechanical one this time.Edited 7/15/2005 10:27 am ET by Lisa L

Hey Lisa,
I've been watching your progress too! Looks great! I guess I'm more of a quiet bystander than an active participant in these forums. But I just wanted you to know that others are watching your progress too and enjoying it! Keep up the great work!
Oh, and keep the updates coming too!
-Kacy
Well, then, here's a margarita for you too!"A completed home is a listed home."
I'm still here.
Just being quiet for a change.
107 degrees yesterday....whew!
Hey Darcy, what's shakin'? If you haven't already discovered this, I'll share with you the secret to summer survival in Sacramento: orange freeze. Merlino's in mid-town and Hagen's (at Walnut and El Camino in Carmichael) both have it. It's the most refreshing and cooling thing we've found, and it's not too sweet. They have other flavors too, but orange is the thing that will get you through this weather."A completed home is a listed home."
Thanks for the tip.
I forgot to mention how great your progress looks!
I've been working too much, plus every Saturday, so my days off have been split. It's okay though, I'll make up for it in August, tho...Riverfest is the weekend after the rafting trip on The American.
Hey, you got anything you'd like me to deliver to Luka for you?
Here's hoping she doesn't say, "a slap upside the head !!"; )

Hey Lisa, Cliff had mentioned something to me some time ago about you two taking on a remodel, but I didn't realize it was such a large undertaking. Looking great! Reads like we need another Quakefest! ;-)
Yowsa !!This time in November !!!Or even better yet, February.

Luka, if we're talkin' November, then maybe we should make it a Quakefest/Thanksgiving shindig. I think some BBQ turkey would be in order. I think Lisa's pool though will be off limits; I'm still trying to think if her remodel would facilitate jumping into the pool from the new addition.
I was thinking that feb was better. In november no one in the north is fed up with winter yet.In feb, yer gonna get people just wanting to get away from winter.
