Little Sis, “Green” with admiration!

| Posted in General Discussion on December 9, 2003 06:01am

Gee, I know there are many who are anti-architect here, but heck, I am so proud of my brother, Kevin.

“. . .the Chicago Center for Green Technology received the American Institute of Architects’ Top Ten Green Building Award for 2003 and is LEED* Platinum Certified. Farr Associates is honored to have led the multi-disciplinary integrated design team that developed this 28,000sf model sustainable design project.”

This is a kid who had his own subscription and read Popular Mechanics from cover-to-cover at age 9, got sent to the principal’s office in 5th grade for reading Sci-Fi novels, and built a Black Walnut roll-top desk in high school that won grand prize at the state fair (CA, a big state!). I still remember his dog-eared copies of The Earth Book and the Foxfire books always laying about when we were kids. . .sorry for the ramble.

Anyway, just couldn’t help but show him off a bit!

    Darcy,

Thank you for sharing your brother's work.

I'm sure you are very proud.

    That is outstanding.

Shame that it has taken this long to

    Go Green!.

    Love it,

Just think what he could have accomplished if he hadn't wasted his time in architecture school!

    :)

Do it right, or do it twice.

Yeah, I guess his tree house would be about 826 stories or more now....with solar panels,

      geothermal exchange, displacement ventilation,....<g>

I'am truly happy for you and your Brother. I'am the type of person who likes those feel good stories.

Always glad to hear some good news.

So what's your Brother up to now? Working for an architect firm or what?

How long a minute is depends on what side of the bathroom door you're on.

    1. darcey | Dec 09, 2003 06:51pm | #7

Yes, he's an architect in Chicago.

For all this bragging that sure was a modest answer. You might have mentioned that he is one of two principles in the firm that won the award. :-)>

This award is issued every year by the American Institute of Architecture's (AIA)Committee on the Environment (COTE) in recognition of Earth Day. It's goal is to recognize the top ten "green" projects for the year and to set the firms responsible forward as exemplary pioneers that others should follow.

The significance of this achievement in architecture circles is HUGE. Winning any award issued directly by the AIA is akin to an actor picking up an Oscar. It carries a world wide recognition and admiration for the receiver's abilities. You have every reason to be very proud of what your brother and his firm have accomplished.

WAY TO GO KEVIN AND COMPANY!!! Keep up the good work!Kevin Halliburton

Gee thanks, Kevin! You said it much better than I could, so I really appreciate your clarifying the importance of this award. He has been a great source of inspiration for me since we were kids, but most recently in my studies of New Urbanism and TNDs.

As a kid, instead of just asking "Why?", he would often ask "Why not?!?"

All I have to say is, just make sure all of your little ones have plenty of tools, scrap lumber, blocks, legos and reading material. . .<g>

I'm matching tool donors to a church mission to Haiti - we're shipping a bus converted to a medical facility in January (we hope) and can fill it with clothes, tools and all sorts of stuff needed in that poorest of all countries. A few hand tools or power tools can provide a livelihood for an otherwise destitute family. Please email me if you have tools to donate.

Yes, I am very proud. Kevin's quite a guy, and he's also a phenomenal carpenter and furniture builder!

I guess one of the main points I also intended to make with my post, in addition to sharing the coolness of it all, was to encourage parents to be very aware of their children's curious minds, and be sure they are richly nurtured. You just never know how far they might go!

thanks, and a cup of good cheer to you!

Yes, that's very cool! I also found this quite amazing:

It is an ambitious LEED Platinum certified building that uses almost 50% less energy than comparable construction and receives over 17% of its energy from photovoltaic cells.

        GoldenWreckedAngle | Dec 10, 2003 07:59pm | #18

Oh yea, about that LEED Platinum certification... no small feat in and of itself. A Leed Platinum rating is the highest certification bestowed by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Here is LEED's web site in case anyone is interested in checking it out further.

        http://www.usgbc.org/leed/leed_main.asp

Our profession could really use more architect's with your brother's commitment to conscientious and sustainable design. I join the other members of the AIA in both admiration of, and aspiration to, his pioneering example.Kevin Halliburton

Gee, Bob, is that all you have to say? I thought you were part of the whole Green Building thing. . .

        1. BobKovacs | Dec 11, 2003 12:36am | #27

You know that you and I have talked privately about Kevin......I'm just so swamped today, I haven't had five minutes to say boo to anyone.   Besides, if I get started on green building, I'll babble for hours.....lol.

    2. darcey | Dec 10, 2003 11:20pm | #22

WOW! This is very neat! Somehow, I knew you and I would find a connection, even in a city the size of Chicago!

I hope to be back for a visit there soon, it would be great to have a tour of your project!

      Thanks,

      darcy

      1. jmo2 | Dec 10, 2003 11:31pm | #23

I would be most please--and extremely embarrassed--to give you the tour :)  It's a mess in here!
