New remodel coming up. 18 x 25 room, greatroom scheme, kitchen/island one end, all glass lake view other, dining, seating, and fireplace beyond kitchen.
Here are a couple views of the room, and one of the new kitchen. Ceiling and walls are all 1×6 t&g STK western red cedar, clearcoated with a matte finish to look natural.
New floor finish to be hardwood, undecided. Owner wants knotty alder for the kitchen finish. Wood everywhere. Drives me nuts . . . makes me think they have locked me in the casket, and nailed on the lid.
Here is the new kitchen plan I cooked up. Existing window is lost and a new Andersen CR 235 goes over the sink location. Everything you see in blue is to be finished with the same WRC STK stock.
What species and finish would you, or your S.O., or your interior decorator or designer, suggest for the new floor?
As an alternative to knotty alder, what would you suggest for the kitchen and island?

Does that clearcoated matte finish prevent the aromatic properties of the western red cedar from entering the living space?
when in doubt add garlic
We did a kitchen that had clear hickory cabinets and brazillian cherry floors that is probably my favorite combination.
Chechen (Metopium brownii) cabinets are my all time favorite cabinets, as good looking as anything any where so maybe that with the brazillian cherry floor gets my vote.
Beer was created so carpenters wouldn't rule the world.
my belly is telling me.... Enough Wood Already !
which means you need a slate floor to contrast all the wood. or a least some form of stone in a very large tile.
but, alas, i have been to Placid, and almost no one there thinks too much wood is a bad thing. the folks there would like to find a way to wrap the moon in knotty pine........
sigh.
carpenter in transition
looks like they wood have 2 x 6 DF or hemlock cardecking and a Velux ceiling waiting to happen
like timkline I'd go slate or bluestone or the like but get me some natural light
on the rest they sound sold on naughty alder

Amen to that! If you go with slate, you might contact Sean Camara at Camara Slate in Vermont. (802) 265-3200. His prices are good and I like the idea of working with American stone when possible.
