A friend of mine has a lockset on an old door to replace. I haven’t seen it. He says it is a full 2″ thick and the bore is 2 1/4″ in dia. 2 3/8″ backset.
He’s afraid a standard lockset won’t cover the hole.
Any ideas?

Listeners write in about removing masonry chimneys and ask about blocked ridge vents, deal-breakers with fixer-uppers, and flashing ledgers that are spaced from the wall.

I've had to holesaw a plug for situs like that. Find a holesaw the right diameter or use a flycutter in a drill press.
Not much side grain to side grain glue surface, but a generous coat of glue ( PL premium is ideal) will hold it pretty well.

2 3/8" backset threw me briefly, but Yale offers a kit to adapt from their standard 2 3/4" for commercial locksets. 2" thick is no problem, nor is the 2 1/4" hole.
I checked a Grainger catalog.

A standard lockset will work. The diameter of the hole is usually 2 1/8" ,an 1/8" larger won't hurt. The latch on most backsets can be set for 2 3/8" which is also standard for some locks. The 2" thickness of the door won't make any difference. The box should give you info on possible backsets, hand, and door thickness. Most locks will work without any alterations.

Thanks! I can give him some ideas.
Most hardware stores and home centers carry metal disks about 1/8" thick with a hole in the center the size of a standard lockset bore but the disk is about one inch in diameter larger then the lock cylinder. This works well for disguising and strengthening the lock area when the hole for the cylinder was cut too big. Don't ask me how I know...
Thanks. That's good to know. Don't ask my why I want to remember this.
