Log cabin chinking material

| Posted in Construction Techniques on July 21, 2004 04:17am

A friend has a log cabin near Taos, it’s about 50 yrs old, and he wants to replace the mortar over rope chinking on the outside cuz it’s becoming a maintenance problem.  The inside is all finished in knotty pine.  Any suggestions as to a somewhat flexible product?  What about NP-1?

If you're gonna cut out that wall you best be quick before someone leans on it and it disappears.

That some kinda multi family birdhouse you got mounted along the top now?

Should have reframed that other roof to drop the roof line, the old metal part looks so cool it's a shame to have the bird condo at the ridge.

Do you and the wife sit in those chairs and just stare at it, wondering what the hell was I thinking?

          :)

yeah, I had the laser out pointing to where this an that is gonna be..

Couldnt reframe the back roof, HAD to move in. I will reframe it after the LOG part is livable..gotta do it in sequence.

That wall is still pretty stout..suprised me.

Yep, I ain't crazy about the ridge look, but I hadda do something, the idiot that set the 2x6's ON the existing ridge shoulda been shot, as it was he died from a massive coronary..that's what log house's will do to you I guess.

      Thanks for the link.

Interesting pics of your estate.  If you don't mind me asking ... how much land, how big is the house, what was the asking price.  And after you spend a few bucks to improve it, do you think it will turn out to be a good deal?

Why ya ask, wanna buy in?   No thanks ... I don't want to mess up your financial plan.

I ask cuz it's not a place I would consider buying, and I wonder what the attraction was/is.  I would like to buy an older home and fix it up, but there's a difference between buying a Chris Craft and the Kon Tiki.  Not being critical ... it's just not something I would get into.

          So what's gonna happen ... buy for 30 ... add 100 ... sell for 200?

not sellin. This is my last home, I hope.

The attraction was/is...fairly remote. Very historical, excellent area for my vocation, and it seemed like a good Idea at the time.

I don't know the name of it, but I saw this stuff in colorado for chinking that was installed by a sub contractor specialist. it pumped out of a hose and foamed ever so slightly like the spray foams, but was grey in coloutr and workable enough to do a bit of troweling to make it look real.

It did stay slightly flexable and seal things up. It was so sticky that I didn't want my tools left laying near where he was working.

I'm betting that log home specialty sites would lead you to it. Maybe search under "log homes + chinking"

There's a gal here by handle of Paula, who has just built a good sized log home and could know something
