this is a log cabin project i was a part of this summer. the house was an hour north of sioux falls, sd. coming from upstate ny it was quite an experience. we got there and there was a pile of logs….no numbers, no log bible, just a vague plan (which turned out to be expensive toilet paper. the loss of elevvation due to the bottom cope was not figured into any of the elevations). there were no pre-drilled holes in the logs, and many of the saddle notches were left out. this was supposed to be e pre-fab log package.all told we ended up cutting just about every log in the place including 75 plus saddle notches. it took four guys five weeks to get to the latest photo.
anyways here is a link to some pics. i should bhave some more shortly, but this should hold you off for now. hope you enjoy.

So what do you think it cost to build?

i'd say there's probably less than 200 into it in the latest photo. i would think that completed he'll have just under 300 into it all told. he is doing a lot of the work himself. those farmers can't help themselves. i was lucky to get on this job, i've never worked fo a nicer family, so rare this day in age.
i loved building this cabin, but i'd have to say that i wouldn't want one to call my own. the walls thinest part is 10 1/2 inches. 1 r value per inch for wood. i'd like a little more my self. it's very rare that the furnace that is recommended by the companies that sell the packages is enough. they figure an air tight structure which is completely unrealistic, even with a machine coped log.
Thing thats weird is the existing original house. I'd probably slice some of those logs in half to side the original house with.

that's exactly what they're doing, though i admit the houses are so different from each other that it's still going to look a little bizarre. i probably would have built cabin in a sperate lot altogether, but....
wow ...
it'd probably take me 5 weeks to do their kitchen!
