We’re about to write an offer on a log home. Not a new manufactured log home, but a real 150 year old log home. Upon move in we want to remodel the kitchen. I have my visions for what the kitchen will look like, but the mrs isn’t grasping them. I tried to search on the internet for log home pictures and only came up with the newer manufactured stuff. Do any members have pictures of old log homes that have been sucessfully remodeled? If you can’t post them, feel free to e-mail them to us! einwaltert at yahoo.com Just take out the “at” and replace it with a @.

I've got one - 'successful remodel' could be debated - I like it, tho
not a lot of good picts loaded on this computer -
are you seeking pictures of a cabin kitchen specifically? or general cabin picts?
I have two friends that live in them too - I think I have some picts on another hard drive, if you want I'll see if I can find them later -

General pics would be appreciated, but I'm specifically shopping for kitchen and front porch pics. The house has been added on twice and based on what I'm seeing, the additions are very old. It's not often you see a home where the addition is using wood poles for the rafters! That puts the addition at or (proably) prior to 1920. The house currently needs a new roof, so we're thinking of putting the insulation over the existing sheathing and then exposing the rafters with a cathedral ceiling. This will really open up the space and make it very dramatic. I know that the original house would have had some windows cut into the logs and when we strip the drywall/plaster we'll need to somehow deal with these holes. Currently, I'm stumped on how to do this sucessfully.

it's been my observation that the log crib was built the first season and the lean to addition added almost immediately afterward - entry porches after that -
where are you? in the midwest, there was a stigma about log cabins - that's where poor people lived, so you moved up/out as soon as possible, or disguised the structure -
and log cabins were where poor people lived - there was truth in the stereotype - hence the poles for rafters - is the rest of the addition sawn lumber?
here's a couple of picts of a friends log home - the addition was done french style with vertical logs - the original structure is horizontal logs, a full two stories, and was faced with limestone and shingles in the 1930's, porch added in the same era - a real nice place, and a step above a 'cabin' -

The house is around 30 minutes north of Milwaukee. I would agree with you on the stigma against the log cabins. The owner has a very old aerial photo that was proably taken pre war. It's hard to make out the house, but it appears to have already been covered with clap boards.

Interesting how the center of the log rotted before the outside. That's something I wasn't expecting.
I'd love to see more before, during and after pics!

I honestly can't say.
I just yesterday had the van take a dump..lost the AC comp. I don't NEED the AC, don't care..but the &#@^%$ Serpentine belt NEEDS the Comp to be there and spin.
I'm looking at 800.00$ and lost work time..sitting here waiting for the shop to call and I can go get it..all this and being on call to drop everything and head to Pa. on a moment's notice ( read leave $$$ readily available for travel and such).
Hell, I never finishe anything here,, you know that..LOL
I will get some new pics as time allows..what with the dog situation, I lost some ground..then garden work, and a few physical problems set me back as well..oh yeah..getting glasses changed everything..man I gotta FIX a LOT of what I fixed.
I WILL be there in Spirit..have no doubt.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Couldn't you yank the comp. rig up a idler pulley and
find a shorter belt?
Too late, just got home. Nice cold air and 800.00 less fat in my wallet.
I thought about that for a fix, but I needed to get rolling ASAP and futzing with ANYTHING under the hood of a van is at least 2x as long as a truck or car..unless yer Female Chinese Midget with 6' long arms and three wrists on each one. Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Sure I "deserve" it..but the MPG goes way down, loss of get up and go is very noticable ( 350 C.I.D.) and I noticed the tranny is now slipping again ( That was heat /outdoor air temp related) after I had it fixed in the spring.
Lucky for me I drive a lot less than I used to, but still, I do a lot of miles..average 100 a day for my close job. Somedays 130-40.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

That's a lot of driving.
I guess you'll just have to keep her running. Damn vehicles can make life difficult. I'm experimenting with
just making payments. Works out alright until it's a payment
and a repair! That xxxx's everything up.
I was just explaining to the wife that either way, it costs XXXX a yr to have a running vehicle, you pay one cost monthly, or get surprized every now and then with a hit.
Add ins upcharge for a liened vehicle and you are still paying out the wazoo for the peace o' mind.
Its a wash I figgure.
This van was a good deal..paid cash, and I have few repairs into it..and it's good and ugly to deter theft.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

I think this is my last "new" one. A couple of years old,
and still in good shape is the way to go.
Regardless $800.00 sucks but life rolls on.

and a porch pict with the transition - it was real fresh here, it's mellowed nicely - not a real good pict, there's a post in the foreground left that actually hides the corner transition - - View Image
seems that most of my cabin photos are well hidden...maybe I ought to take some fresh ones - - "there's enough for everyone"
That wall is west, all the weather hit it for 150+ years. It is no longer as much log as even that was, the corner is gone, it is framed, and sheathed , and Hardie lap siding. Long term benfits outweighed "historical preservation"
I too have pole rafters on one side, and split ash 4x4's on the other, I have a "Saddle bag home" witha "dog-trot". The kitchen and fully half of my sqftage is an addition. I m at 2400sqft, 32x42 1.5 story w/basement under 16x42.

BTW - don't pay too much for that money pit....
I don't have any pics but a friend of mine has a beautiful place, the walls are flatsawn and all of the trim is clear pine, unfinished. Every spring he goes and gives handprints a quick sand, it looks amazing. The Kitchen is antique finished pine, beautifully given an aged look, with painted black pine countertops that have worn through and continue to wear through to reveal pine underneath with a beautiful 3" round bullnose on the front. Dream house/cottage material . Unfinished pine doors. wide plank flooring. Everything in the place has a rustic/antique look. Good luck with your work. I will try and grab some pics.
