What ever happened to the Log In button?
I emailed Andy about this, but have yet to get a responce from Taunton.
Here’s my problem:
The draftsman that works out of our office has a computer that I use to connect to Breaktime from time to time. When I connect from that computer, it somehow knows it’s GACC Dallas and doesn’t ask me to log in. Same thing with my home computer. Now I don’t understand how that works, and it bothers me a great deal, but I’ve learned to live with it. I don’t like that it knows me automaticly. It’s disturbing to me.
Now my friend John Martin at work wants to log in himself with AutoCad questions for you folks. However, when he uses his computer, Taunton thinks it’s me. He wants to log in as himself, not me, but it won’t let him, and it won’t stop thinking his computer is GACC Dallas and we can’t find a way around it.
What the heck is going on?
Ed.

I'm curious too Ed. I always have to log in. I start at the log in page.
http://webx.taunton.com/WebX?15@@[email protected]
Ed, just go to the above URL and you probably will be able to log in.

*Ed, When was the last time you deleted the contents of your "Cookie" folder?b ;) You have a Taunton "cookie" that remembers you, delete it and you will have to log in to post messages.blue, you always "have" to log in because that's where you enter the site from.Dano
*The problem is that each of those computers that have been used by you to log in with has a "cookie" stored on it. Cookies are small files that store information like names, passwords, etc... Each time you go to Breaktime, the cookie is recognized by the site software, and thinks it is you.Go into the Windows folder. Find "temporary internet files" Deelete ALL of the info in this file (it is only temporary information anyway, so you won't lose anything important). Next time you go to Breaktime after doing this, it will ask you to log in becasue the computer no longer has the cookie on it. Now, each time you leave the internet, do the same thing and delete the temporary internet files. On your home computer, you may want to leave the cookie in the file, and delete all the rest. It will be the one that says WebX.taunton, or something similar.James DuHamel
*It's more that just cookies. I have a feeling that it works with that new 'identifier' in a lot of the newer cpu chips. My comp is older, and doesn't have that identifier in it, and I have to re-log in every time I close the browser. I once set my computer and browser up to accept every kind of java, and cookie, and every other sort of web identifier there is, and I STILL had to log in every time that I closed the browser. It isn't just cookies...All that being said... Ed, look at the top of this page. You will see a 'logout' button on the top right. Use that button to log out. Then I'll bet you'll see a log in button again.
*I'm not sure about that danford. Even before I used to start at the login site, I always had to log in. I'm not big on saving internet files. Everything is dumped automatically as best as I can. I don't have any history etc.blue
*I believe that if you go to your Breaktime Preferences, there is an option to use or not use cookies.Rich Beckman
*Yup, there is.But I believe that if you opt not to use cookies, you have to log in every time you want to make a post.
*I had an interesting thing happen a few months ago...While logged on to BT under MY access, I copied the URL of a thread to email to someone else so they could reference it.When they used that URL to go to BT, they read the thread, then surfed and decided to add posts to threads. The posts they added came up under MY name.I emailed the sysop, they said they'd fix the backdoor...needless to say, I don't email the URLs to threads anymore.Ed, If they haven't fixed this "backdoor," and your bookmarked URL that you use to access Taunton leads to something other than the login page, like maybe the main "Breaktime-FHb Discussions" page, there's a chance that by coming in to the forum via a URL copied when you previously accessed the forum with your password that the software assumes it's you. (That's one helluva confusing run-on sentence, eh?)Like (was it Blue?) wrote, change your bookmark/access URL to the URL of the login page.Hope that wasn't too confusing...
*Thanks for the tip Mongo. I'm going to try a new bookmark.blue
*Mongo, that worked for me. I now am going in direct to a page, already logged in. Now to remember how to drag the shortcut onto the start menu.....?Thanks!
*Ed,I've been using autocad since release 10 back in '90. I currently have release 14 on my own box and have used autocad 2000. if there is anything I might be able to help your friend or your draftsman with please don't hesitate to have them drop me an email or even call me for that matter. you've been very helpful to me and if I can repay you in some way by helping out I would be glad to.(Being an enginerd I spent ALOT of time on autocad)Steve
*Luka,I have a 1995 Compaq computer, with windows 95 and IE version 5.5Every time I log off, I clear everything out of the temp internet files, EXCEPT the taunton cookie. When I do this, I NEVER have to sign in. If I accidently, or soemtimes on purpose delete the taunton cookie, I have to log in next time I go to this site. Same thing on some other sites I visit. Delete the cookie, and have to log back in next time I visit. Leave the cookie, and no log in required. On my puter anyway.James DuHamel
*Curiouser and curiouser.
*Luka,What is even more "curiouser" is that as of this morning, I nowi have to log in. I have not deleted my cookies in two days. It's pretty obvious to me that the boys in California are "fixing" things again, what with all the deletions of discussions and messages.I also find it odd that even after Tim's explanation of "roles" over in "Knots", no one from SysOps has provided any explanation what the heck is going on.For clarification for those not aware, Tim Sams is now an Associate Editor and also "moderates" content, SysOps is responsible for site functionality issues.Dano
*Gentlemen,Thanks again.I'll leave the cookies and bookmarked URL on my home computer. When I get to work on Monday, I'll disable the cookies on John's computer for Breaktime and change the URL bookmark to the login page. Problem solved. Thanks again.Steve,I know I've been short with you in the past. I'll tell John (the draftsmans) of your generous offer. Thank you.Ed.
*Ed., no one mentioned the "Log Out" button. The right-hand one of the set at the top of the screen. Betcha after using that, he will be able to log in as himself, without fussing with cookies and such.Dave
*i Ed., no one mentioned the "Log Out" button.Dave, I do believe Luka did in post #4.b :)Any who, as I said earlier, the point has now become moot. Since it now appears that one has to log in regardless, at least I now have to even though I have not deleted my cookie or history files in two days.Dano
*Ed,Don't mention it. I hope that I can be of assitance. as for being short with me, I understand. I am coming into you guys' world. you have your whole life into this work and I come along asking for help on stuff it took you years to learn. I'm no saint so let's let bygones be bygones and help each other where we can.Steve
*I still do not log in. It comes up automatically. Of course, one thing I noticed is that thepage I go directly to is this one, not Taunton's main page.James DuHamel
*James,That's where I messed up my thinking.I bookmarked the main post page after I logged in once. It takes me there everytime and I don't have to log in.Ed.
*Durn attention deficit disorder. Luka, I swear I don't just skip your posts.... ;-)Just like James and Ed., I don't have to log in. Maybe it's a Texas thing. I enter from the "Discussions Home Page".Dave
*I had to log on today, even though I went to the same place that I didn't have to log on yesterday. It's probably because my files get cleaned out automatically..Oh well, I tried.blue
*Mongo, I made the same mistake last week, emailing a url to the honorable and honest Sonny Lykos. After he opened it, Sonny was on my log-in, with my system privileges.Andy
*Hmmm....Now I don't have to log in either. I come in from thei Knots main board. Ib still think they are messing around with the server. "They" being the yahoos in California.Dano
*Hello All,Just a quick note: You will notice that the logout button has been added. GACC this will solve the problem you are having with same computer multiple users. Just use the logout button when you finish up and the next person will have to login with there own settings. I am also in the process of figuring out from the WebX folksd what other "improvements" have been put into this latest release of software that we are now running. The logout button, and the search index has been redone, I am about to test that out right now... I will be posting in the site status folder in the next day or two all the new features so hang tight for just a little longer. Thanks Mark (SYSOP)P.S. Make sure you give Andy a great big thanks for he has been working on the boards for the last 8 weeks without any help from the SYSOP and has done a fantastic job!
*OK....here's the news,I deleted the bookmark on my friends computer at work today. I pulled up Fine Homebuilding on Lycos. Went to BT and it read it as me. OK. I canceled the cookies and logged out using the log out button. Shut down the computer. Rebooted and went back to FH thru Lycos and hit BT. It pulled up the log-in or browse page. I logged in as GACC Dallas and all is normal. Got home, hit the bookmark for BT and it sent me to the log-in page.I guess I canceled the cookies (is'nt there a better word?) for GACC Dallas at work. So now I have to log-in. I could re-bookmark the site after I login tonight, but who cares. If I add a new bookmark and delete the old one, I'll be scrolling down to find it which may take longer than logging in because of all the bookmarks I have.I'll just login from now on.If I don't logout tonight will it still read me as me at work? The plot thickens.Geez.Ed.
*Almost makes you want to pull the plug on the computer and pull out the slide rule to do your figuring......well...not really.
*I hate to sound wishy washy, but I didn't have to log on today. The same bookmark that didn't log me on yesterday, logged me on today!I think I'm talking to myself....blue
*Mark Coleman was the sysop who replied to my initial email regarding this "backdoor access" to the forum. That was back on July 10th, and his reply? "We're working on a patch."Not terribly important now that I know about it, but I must have sent out hundreds of links over the past 4 or 5 years.
*Mongo,Four or five years?I have no idea how long I've been here.I think three years?Anybody remember when I was the new guy? My memory sucks. Too much fun in the 60's.Fusco should remember when I got here. He and I had a round or two at my start. Maybe he'll remember. Dicky was here when I got here. Remember Dicky? What a maroon. AJ was here and so was FredB. Blue? I think so. There was Gabe Martell. But I haven't seem him in a while. Mark Cadioli was here. He's a good guy. So was Blodgett. He's a good guy too.Can I say "sucks"?I think I remember Andy saying something about watching our mouths.Ed.
*It should. I never log out, both home and work. Maybe the software would care if you started posting from both places at the same time, though I doubt even that would be trouble.I'm twenty years a Computer Programmer, and I tell people often, don't be surprised when the technology doesn't work, be surprised it ever does. ;-)Dave
*I guess about 4 1/2 years...came aboard back in '97. When I actually quantify it, it seems like such a long time ago...Yeah, lots of names have come and gone...almost as many sysops, too.I give Taunton credit, despite the occasional glitch, they have always had the best software. That makes it easy to stick around.
