Hi
I’m planning for the build of an A-frame that calls for 26ft long rafters. My local lumberyards only stock lumber to 24ft long. LVL are much more costly so looking for alternatives.
Would splicing 2×12 together work ? what joint would be best ? scarf of half lap splice ?
Would I-joists be an option (I havent looked at price yet just assuming they are slighlty cheaper than LVL), and how would they connect at the top given we are not using a ridge beam.
Thanks for your input !

I would not splice. Maybe with a steel reinforcement. But do you see a spliced joint being problem free for the next 100 years. It’s not worth the amount of work and money to fix it should it fail. Go lvl or make your design work at 24’.
