Long Squirrel story, need short answer
Is there any way to keep squirrels from coming back to a nest they built in my overhang?
I noticed a hole in the freize board when we bought the house but haven,t gotten around to fixing it yet. Monday I am working in front yard and out pops squirrel head. Go up to second floor window and have a stare down with intruder. I only had wasp spray on hand so i give the hole a shot. Stick my head back in window and said intruder is now standing behind me. Run to cellar grab shovel and chase begins ending up with intruder back in overhang.( the sights on my shovel must be off).
Later that night i seal up hole into house with spray foam. Next morning spray some bleach water into hole outside, out pops squirrel, runs away. I quickly seal up hole outside with a piece of aluminum.
Come back last night to find more frieze board, siding and moulding chewed up. He’s trying to get back in i think. I open door to see squirrel tail up stairs, proceed up stairs with shovel in one hand and bb gun in other to find a much bigger(mom, i guess) running around, and chewing thru foam on inside of house. Took two shots and chased here all the way to the cellar and she escapes thru hole in porch( i didn’t get to fiximg them yet either, did nail aluminum on them last night.
This morning i find alot more damage outside, spray more bleach water, hear some russeling but nobody came out, I waited a while then proceed to rip apart overhang, Sawzall, prying, banging, no movement.Sticlk mirror in there, nothing. WTF. Stick mirror in again and wow there’s an eye staring back at me and then all heck broke loose in the overhang. Run upstairs, commence spraying, see two young ones, one leaves other stays. One that left goes up to roof and i spot him on the chimney. Watched him thru binoculars for 20 minutes, no movement. Move ladder ,climb up on roof(with shovel)soon as i step on roof he comes to life and shoots dowm chimney. I give up for today. iwant to get the other one out, don’t know how yet)tried acetone sprayed into overhang but no luck, and then replace board on overhang and keep those buggers away.I want to try fox
but not ready to travel to Cabelas to get it.&

type in squirrel and tell the function you want exact word..
hit search...
go get lunch or a couple of beers...
some of the answers are creative...
you can type in key words such as, cannon, drown, shoot, poison, release, live trap, murder, pest, flying squirrel, mayhem, drowing and a host of other items..
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming
WOW!!! What a Ride!
Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
Rat poison, the kind that is in small ball-shaped nuggets. Smear with peanut butter and put a few nuggets in the attic. Takes a few days but they are gone.
Do you have a name brand handy? Thanks
Usually anyplace that sells animal feed has them. I get mine at Tractor Supply.
Thanks for the story
what you need is a good cat to do all that chasing for you, unless you need excitement in your life.
Try a few mothballs up in their home to make them uncomfortable about staying there

Piffin there's more to it and very comical. The first time he came out the hole i saw him run around the side of the house. There i am bb gun in one hand 1/2 gallon spray bottle in the other running around the house and yard looking for the bleached blonde bugger. Last night i was running around with shovel in one hand crossman in the other chasing mom around. Heart pumping the whole time, I heard they go for the jugular when they strike! I am fashioning a leather necklace as we speak:)
I might try the mothballs tonight. They aren't in the house so bait inside won't work, i do have two traps with PB set up just in case. The big problem is the only way to see if they are in there is to spray it or put up ladder right next to hole. The ladder puts me at face height with hole and too close for comfort, isee an episode of the three stooges or the scene from alien with that scenario.
Thanks to all i neededto vent and laugh. Squirrels two, me zip.
Thanks to all, I needed to vent and laugh at myself.
Sounds like a cartoon I used to watch.
Time to give them names and welcome them to the dinner table. Sounds like they might be more intelligent and resourceful than at least one of the humans who'll be sitting there.
:-)
I like to cover their entrances with 1/2"X1/2" hardware mesh (or whatever it is callled). I found that they try to chew through it instead of around it which is what they did with sheet metal. You can build one way spring loaded doors if trapping them inside is a concern. We found that killing one squirrel just lead to another moving in. I worry about a poisoned squirrel being eaten by a pet or a homeless person.

Like Jim and other said, subsonic .22 or pellet air rifle. From just 30-40 ft a squirrel is a really big target.
Maybe you need a little range time to build confidence? Rabbit was gnawing DWs garden despite fence and screens. Saw that sucker sitting behing the truck tire with about an inch of head showing. Ruger 10-22 with full size 3-9X scope, Russian subsonic .22 load, no more rabbit, no worry about hitting tire either.
Wont say anything about lawn mower mufflers.
BTDT.
My technique is to mount a shelf outside the hole give the SOBs a front porch, so to speak, with a Hav-a-hart sitting directly in line with the hole.
It's your call what to do next, whether that means a drive into the country, or 8 minutes of garbage bag/truck exhaust. Both are illegal where I live, but I'm not paying the licensed guys $200 per squirrel -- unh-unh.

Remove any tree that is within 25' of your house. Sure the squirls can climb your house, but they will likely vacate if they don't have access via trees. I know this from first hand expierence.
You ever see the movie, I think it was MouseTrap, with Nathan Lane? About a mouse who outsmarted all attempts to remove or kill him?
Maybe your squirrels have.
My solution to squirrels is to get a Havahart trap and attempt to catch rabbits. This is partly because my city has an ordinance that makes the intentional harassment or other injury to squirrels a crime, but rabbits aren't protected. Squirrels, as curious as they are, will enter the trap before the rabbits and be caught, since the rabbits seem never to find the bait more interesting than what's already in our garden. Take the squirrel across a highway or body of water, if you can, then release it. You'll never see that particular squirrel again. By the time you get back home, a new squirrel will have replaced the one you just moved, since nature abhors a vacuum, and squirrels are territorial. Repeat the previous steps. Though you'll never totally get rid of the squirrels, you may be able to keep the ones that replace the ones you've just moved a bit off balance before they are, in turn, caught in your trap, and you'll have some summer recreation to boot. My neighbor got twenty-three last year, though we still have them around. The next alternative is to capture and train a red tailed hawk, a bit more difficult.

I lived your nightmare a few weeks ago.A pair of squirrels got into a dormer and the little suckers were making a nest in my insulation. The 1st time I realized they were making their winter home in my attic was when I got home from work one day and saw little pieces of insulation all over the driveway....I placed a Havahart trap up on the roof (placed a towel under it so it would not slide off the roof) and my bait was some peanut butter on a cracker and the next AM I had my 1st catch... The key now is to relocate them FAR away.. I am talking miles not around the block and better yet if you can get a natural obstacle between you and your friend even better - think body of water ie. river. It took a few more days to catch the last one but they are now out of there. I just have to remove a branch that is hanging close to the roof that I think they were using as a path to my roof.good luck
get a bb gun, sit on the back porch, grab a cold drink, and within twenty minute your problem solved. all for about 2 dollar in BBso BB says get a BB
I use a Hav-a-hart trap baited with peanut butter on a cracker and some dried fruit.Works very well, then toss the trap in a bath of water once they stop bubbling they are done. (Waterboarding for squirels without the questions.)Then once the nest is empty mix concentrated liquid ammonia with peppermint oil and spray with a garden spray into and round the hole. Then put some sheet metal patch over the hole. The mixture burns your respiratory tracts so wear an organic vapour mask. However it will destroy the pee smell that the next family will look for. Good hunting Jako
