We don't get Grace where we're from, but to answer your question, we don't typically use I&WS unless the roof is gonna have to stand open for a while. As steep as your roof is and with no soffit and your climate, I don't see any reason to use it. Up in Walter's neck of the woods it's more of a necessity, but I see too many roofer's around here substitute I&WS for bad practices and hope it'll save them.

I went to the lumberyard this morning to try to match the rake crown. But they didn't have anything that was reasonably close enough. So I had Dale put a 1x6 in to match the fascia and a 1x4 to temporarily take the place of the crown. Hopefully by the Fall I'll get in there and run Azek, sit back and enjoy it all for the next 50 years.

I noticed in Walter's Penobscot thread that he builds his roof jacks a little different than Dale. Walter 'weaves' the tabs on the boot to the plate. It appears Dale just solders it. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I had 4 roof jacks made last fall, not copper, and they fabricated them using Walter's method.

Dale tabbed it out, but the tabs were all on the bottom side of the roof flange. When I fab one in the shop, I cut the angle on a CMS, set the pipe on a copper plate without the hole cut and solder it. Then I cut the hole out from the bottom. I've done it that way for years and never had a problem - seems to be plenty strong. If the tube is in direct contact with the plate consistantly around the circumference it makes for a very strong solder joint.
I suspect Walter alternates the tabs to hold the tube in place and to give it more strength in the event of snow slides. We don't have to deal with that problem much here and I doubt you do either. I've done it Walter's way and probably would have to use that method if I was working in the field, especially with a cone VS a tube.
In the shop, it's easy enough for me to calculate things that I'd eyeball in the field. I've got a bunch of clamps and magnets that I can hold stuff in place with on the work table that wouldn't necessarily be available to me on the roof or even the job site, so my methods would change based on that.
Oh, and Dale said he was hurrying and talking and cut the angle on his tube backwards. Wasn't sure if he had enough copper to remake the tube. I'd have made them before he left, but we were a little unsure of the roof slope at the rear of the house.

Since most of my work is in the field not at the shop I make these onsite .
I like to test the fit during and after the fabrication to make sure the fit to the roof and slates are good . Once that is established then I'll go down to the tailgate soldering bench and have at it .
Slate can't conform to a stack boot that doesn't lay well so I take extra steps to try to eliminate that hassle . I also solder the bottom side which I didn;t get a good picture of yesterday .
I make these the same way you'd make a copper drain for a flat roof - tabbed both ways for mechanically fastening , and the solder to make it watertight . Solder isn't supposed to be structural.

Instead it seemed (I was on my bike as I went by, so I didn't get a great look) that it had the base flashing, then a bumpout to cover the base of the pipe, then transitioned to a rubber flange for the seal. And that was it, the bulk of the pipe length was then left uncovered.Don't know whether it's good or bad, just struck me as different.Actually saw lots of interesting homes to add to my thread on the ride yesterday.Best,

I'm gonna argue with that a little.
The way you had your cone tabbed over and under added some strength, but I bet I could pull the two pieces apart with my hands without much trouble. So the true strength holding the pieces together comes from the solder. Your tabs just hold it in place until the solder grabs.
I'd be willing to bet that there's not a great difference in strength (wish I had a way to test it) between your method and mine. I think mine is stronger.
Also, since I'm not dealing with all the tab perimeters, and have a cleaner edge to solder, I'd also guess my method is more likely to be leak free.
One thing I believe you're also not considering about my method is when I cut out the bottom of the base plate, I cut the hole an 1/8' to a 1/4" small around the perimeter and then flange that 1/8" to 1/4" back upwards inside the tube and and then run a quick bead around that joint on the inside. Looking back, I don't see that I illustrated that.
Not trying to pick a fight. After you made that comment, I decided to look at the engineering of my process vs yours and I'm gonna have to stick to mine.

On a more educational note, what tool do you use to cut the hole in the bottom of the jack?? Drill a hole then hand snips?? A power tool?? A 3 or 4" oval would be rough looking cut for me to solder.

Right now it 8 ft off a deck. So it is REAL EASY to do.When they get do the roof the deck might be gone. But it is simple 2 story with clear access to put up a ladder.If I have the time I might cut and fit it now. Then it will be simple to "slap up" when later..

I do like Dale did there onsite. If ya notice he went and used the scaffold as an anvil to turn the lip on the bottom of the tube. Makes soldering easier.
Do that for gutter drops sometimes too. All them ears or tabs are OK, but makes for more solder, and sometimes less attractive looking...basically both Dale and I do what ever way gets it done , depending on our mood..LOL

Max is a little shy conversationally, but is probably the most productive and takes great pride in that. And I just got off the phone with Dale. We had these left over from a fake slate job. You can't use your average roof jack on slate - the nailing flange isn't long enough.
These are attached with a copper strip nailed or screwed under the slates/shingles and attached to the bottom of the jacks. To remove them, you cut the copper at the bottom of the slate/shingle and add a new strip for the next use.
These jacks can hold a 2x12 plank or even an aluminum pic.
They're made from whatever 2x is laying around on site and can be made to whatever slope is necessary.
We can do a roof and leave them in place around dormers for the siding queers and not have to come back to retrieve them. http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image

I'll butt in here to relay that the Hatteras (Certainteed) Shingle instructions warn about that combination in Coastal areas. The salt accelerates the electrolysis.
Otherwise, it isn't a big issue,A La Carte Government funding... the real democracy.

Well, I didn't have the correct grasp of what that thing looked like from the top. I had a little different game plan for it than what Dale's doing, but he's simplified it for the better. Instead of installing valleys around the "bump", he's made a larger sheet conform which is gonna leave just one seam on each wing. He's crimped the drip edge to conform and locked the roof pan to it. He's clipped the seams down and will finish it today, I guess.http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image

Golf's going OK. We're not moved in yet, mainly because the church parsonage needed a lot more work than I thought, and I've ended up doing all of it, and I still have paying jobs that take preference.
Right now, we anticipate moving right after Memorial Day.
Could you take a pic of an individual shingle? I can't picture what it looks like, since there doesn't seem to be any straight butt lines on the roof. Are they rectangular, like a standard shingle?

By the time he wanted to go through the chair rail, I figured we'd try a different tack.He did say they could mill a custom profile. There are products out there like stained glass people use to turn the solder to copper color .
I'm going to get some to use on the soldered seams of that barrel roofed dormer I did recently . I don't like the look of the seams on that roof so I'll change them to blend in better .

I've got some of that stuff. It works OK. I've used it on leader heads and objects that are more visible.
There's usually a method to Dale's madness. I didn't pre-fab the WV boots because I couldn't get a true read on the slope other than the front gable (14/12). The rest of the roof is 12/12, but I couldn't tell for sure from the pictures I had. http://www.quittintime.com/ View Image

yeah, Dale is addictive. he and I were at logger heads at first, his expertise and my years.
But once we climbed that hurdle, we were joined at the hip. Two Virgos with a penchant for accuracy....he's a tuff nut to crack, but one of the most sincere folks I have ever known.
And i'd say that about Grant as well, you can't get any better.

Ok so my wife was looking at a home across the street and it was getting some kind of copper..she says " You know? You could do that?"
I mentioned the copper there, he pasted a pic of the house.
Shortly there after we moved into the shack, I did a roof (ccedar) and needed valley and ridge roll..Grant says he needs a wood worker for some columns...I way under bid, but wanted him as a contact.
Then he says he has a roof to do, OAK shakes..a nightmare, but I was closer to the gig, and actually can do the impossible...then he has a cedar shake job, me again.
By now I was liking the gigs, and I had never seen a box gutter,
so he turns me loose on a job w/Dale.
Dale hates me, I kinda hate him, freaking Grant puts us together and by golly by gosh, we bond..we rock and roll.
I can't physically keep up with Dale, I love him like a brother ( as do Grant) but I've torn this body up too much.

I've got 2/3 of the place rewired. Top floor is left. Going to do that when I rip out the sheetrock, foam the underside of the roof and clean up the worst trim you've seen in a bit.Actually when I look at the trim, which I try not to, I think 'Shep would burst out laughing at seeing this'. There's a spot of base that's maybe 2 feet long and there are 4 pieces in there. All in varying heights of course. That's kind of how I'm feeling about the house we're moving to. There was a spot in the hallway, about 4' long, that had 3 pieces of base.
I HAD to change that.
And I can't b*tch about the construction of the house at church. One of the church members' father built the place. Personally, I think he used a lot of leftover materials from other jobs, and pieced them all in.
Well you can always log in and grouse to us about it. LOLI just figure I'm getting a terrific education as I work my way around the place.
