Looking for downdraft gas range

| Posted in General Discussion on January 14, 2001 04:56am

We recently put a contract on a spec home that requires a downdraft range and we prefer a gas stove. The models we have looked at so far come with 2 burners and a grill as the default configuration. You can get 4 burners but have to purchase the additional burners at a cost of about $300. We would like to find a model that has 4 burners/no grill. Also, the builder says we should be able to find a downdraft gas range for $1000 (that’s our allowance) but so far the best we can do is an Amana for $1200 + $300 for the additional burners. Any suggestions?

I have installed dozens of downdraft ranges over the years in my homes.

The price and the allowance seems right. They normally come with 2 burners and a grill. The 2 additional burners are an extra option at additional cost.

Make sure the layout of the cabinets is per the installation instructions as installing some of them can be a real bear.

    Good luck.

    Ron.

*Amana downdraft 30"NOTE: I'm not connected with them in any way, and I've not ordered anything from them. I cannot vouch for the company, I just provided the info I found from a 2 minute web search.

*I know that Jennair makes an electric w/4 burners &downdraft, as we have some friends with one. Have to assume it can also be had in gas.

*Beth, we've installed several Jenn-Air's, and our clients seem satisfied. If you like the stainless "professional" look, the Jenn-Air SVD8310S comes with two two-burner modules AND an interchangable grill. This is a "dual-fuel" model, with gas burners and electric convection oven. We liked it so much we installed one here at home.Good luck, Steve

*One note of caution regarding the downdraft. Downdrafts tend to be inadequate at pulling upward-moving hot air back down and exhausting it out of the house. I consider them barely adequate in exhausting the waste from standard 10K-ish BTU burners, and near useless on the 15-18K BTU burners.Even more so on island installations...because of that I'd never recommend downdraft on an island.Talking LP or gas here...electric resistance burners? They're slightly better with electric...but still narginal on an island.

*Jan; I installed a dual fuel Jenn-air in my house 1 1/2 yrs ago. Love it! Has a gas cooktop/grill and an electric/convection oven. Downdraft of course. Short of a commercial stove, it's pretty nice. Stainless, paid somwhere around $1100.00.Will

*Go over to Fine Cooking and post your question, either on the general board, or the equipment board. You should get some more answers there.

*Beth, is the ducting is already in place? What is the length and diameter if so? All manufacturers give a minimum diameter and maximum run for their particular unit. Remember to add about 5 ft. for every elbow or transition. Is the unit on an outside or interior wall, or an island installation? You could widen your selection by going with a pop-up vent that mounts behind a standard cooktop, but these require precise duct placement also. As far as effectiveness, I agree they are limited, but then you need to think about what kind of cooking you do. Most of the overhead hoods I have installed were headknockers at the manufacturers advised height and useless whan insalled any higher. Also some downdraft units can effect the flame when running full bore. I put a downdraft unit in my aunts kitchen and she absolutely loves it. Cooking is her hobby she even has caterers using her kitchen during the holidays and it works just fine. Larry

*I used one of the pop-up units, and it does seem inadequate. Works great for everything except the things you really need it to: frying bacon, etc. It's also an island application, with a near max duct run. Seems to flow plenty of air, but IMO, trying to draw hot moist air sideways and down is just not normal. And yes it does try to blow out the flame on simmer. Despite all this, the boss-lady is thrilled with it. A hood over the island would have overwhelmed this nice kitchen. And we rarely fry, so its not really an issue very often.
