Looking for input on Porter-Cable tools

| Posted in General Discussion on February 16, 2001 09:53am

Ok guys VENT! let’s hear what you’ve got to say about Porter-Cable, I recently bought the orbital 11A recip and the 14.4 3/8 drill/driver along with the right side (right being correct!) 7 1/4 sidewinder. I guess I was having a gray day…anyway so far the stuff has treated me ok and I just want to hear what the board thinks. I won’t buy the yellow stuff because I’ve had some interesting discussions with some of their engineers, AJ I know your votes for the blue tools, but how about the rest of ya’ll.

690 router, 505 sander, 5" h&l random orbit sander, all work well for many years. Had to replace the depth clamp knob on the router, and the h&l pad.

*I'm with Ed. Most of my P-C tools seem to perform as I expect. The only P-C tool I'm not real pleased with is their new style jigsaw with the tooless blade change.

        *PC makes something besides routers?

          *No complaints so far...

*I like my P-C sidewinder, other than that cheap little metal tube used for the sawdust. (Gets bent & banged up easy.)Mike

*Great routers, rotten sanders. One of the last pro level pistol grip cordless drills. Some winners

*No more PC tools for me. I have 2 routers, 3 random orbit sanders, one belt sander , had a Sawboss and two jigsaws. The jigsaws got tossed about 5years can't compare with a Bosch. I need to make one good router out of the two. The screws losen and get lost. The depth adjustment is terrible. The orbit sanders seem to be disposable. The belt sander goes through switches fast and there is not enough room inside it to put on a good heavy cord. The cords on all the tools are cheap, switches seem to go quicker than all my other tools. I buy Bosch trim tools, Milwaukee drills, Hitachi air tools and Skill Wormdrives. These tools seem to last for me. The parts for PCs also take too long to get and I end up buying new tools I shouldn't have too. Of all the tools I own they are consistently the worse.

*Daved:How'd you link the Sawboss? I've been thinking of buying one of those for a "heavy trim saw" for a while. Re the original question, I have a PC router, sidewinder, 4 air nailers and an air stapler. I have no specific complaints against any of those. These tools get medium frequency use. I try to take care of my tools, but I am not the only one who uses them - and you know what that means!

*Steve, It's easy to get sucked into the brand loyalty game (took a few yrs. to learn) .re. your ? 5" R O sander 10 yrs. old . Like new, no problems, used alot. Happy w/ it.When my 15yr. old Makita sawzall dies, will consider PC tigersaw. Naah Milwakee.

*Do they make a chainsaw ?

          8. Frank_"Mad_Dog"_Maglin | Jan 02, 2001 03:44pm | #12

*Well Steve, It's like every tool manufacturer out there. No one has a complete line of tools that are perfect. There are some good tools in each manufacturers line as well as many lemons.Luka,Did you ever build the mitre saw station? Inquiring minds want to know.

          9. Steve_Merrette | Jan 02, 2001 07:39pm | #13

*Frank, Yeah I built it and it came out real good. rock solid and heavy! I built it to stay in place and used 2x10's for the skirts. planed to 1" thick an ripped to 8" wide. I build most of my shop benches out of 2x material. I got some real nice industrial levelers from my day job so it sits pretty. I built the top from 3/4 melamine and dadoed the fence into that.I'll have to scan in some polaroids if you're interested in seeing the beast. I've been kinda reluctant to show any of the stuff off because I figured no one would be interested. As for my original question in this thread, I've since bought 4 nail guns, clipped head spiker, 15 ga. trimmer and a 16 ga. trimmer as well as an 18 ga. brad gun, all of them PC, but now I've gotten a Bosch jigsaw and a Milwaukee 3/8" magnum holeshooter. I have been replacing most of my Craftsman industrial stuff with better equipment as I slowly build my side business up. it doesn't come cheap but as you all know it's worth it in the long run when the tools don't let you down.

          10. Luka_ | Jan 02, 2001 09:37pm | #14

*Not yet. I don't yet have a shop to put the thing in. For now, I have discovered some old aluminum bakery karts. They are tall and thin. Boxes. I lay two on their sides, one on top of the other, and put the saw on that. Provides a long, tall bench with storage underneath. Works really well, and is semi-portable. At least as portable as I need it to be for now.

          11. Brandon_Buck | Feb 16, 2001 04:54pm | #15

*I own many Porter Cable tools, compressor, brad and finish guns, palm sander, sawzall, skillsaw, and have had very good success with all of them.

          12. Chris_Robb | Feb 16, 2001 09:21pm | #16

*Belt sander, router, 18g nailer, all good with no problems in daily use. Would'nt waste energy throwing the palm sanders across the yard.

          13. George_Abramshe | Feb 16, 2001 09:44pm | #17

*Good routers. Everything else that I've owned is average at best. Still they are decent tools for the money. Air guns are cheap.

          14. Rick_Seigmund | Feb 16, 2001 09:51pm | #18

*Very happy with all my PC tools, Basically stick with routers and sanders. I have a tiger saw which performs great so far( 2 years) . Sidewinder saw a good tool also. Had my Bosch 12 compound miter saw walk off site recently and would like to find out more about new PC cms. Otherwise will probably get another Bosch.
