Looking for Post Sleeves

shearwater | Posted in General Discussion on August 17, 2007 03:02am

I am estimating a large porch, and I need a source for a PVC post sleeve that slides over or wraps around a 6×6 post.   So far what I’ve found is:

Trademark rail systems makes a 6x, co-extruded PVC/composite, 9′ long.  Price $150/ea.

Advanced trimwright makes a wrap-over sleeve, also about $150.  http://www.advancedtrimwright.com/portfolios/gallery.htm

I could make them myself our of Azek, at a material cost about $100 per unit plus my labor.

With 26 posts in this porch, this is gonna add up.  Does anyone know of anything else – it has to be 6×6 though.  Thanks.

If the 6x6 is ACQ treated, Aluminum cladding is not a good idea (galvanic corrosion).

        Good point.  Maybe lead?

I'd wrap the posts in durock and "tile" them with bits of broken beer bottles. ;o)

Have you tried googling "Precast Fiberglass Columns"?

Over $400 per column seems rather expensive. Plus the flutted look may not be appealing to everyone.

I thot it was 4 pieces for one price, like a hundred a pop.  No?

          thanks for the suggestions.

I've used rdi rail - i don't recall a 6x6 but if they've got it, it will work.  Not as fancy as some of the other products, but not bad.

I'd have to seal & finish MDO really well in a damp, Maine, seaside environment, no?

Hooverfence looks promising.  So does the alum cladding.

I'm still leaning toward fabricating them of Azek.  At about $100 for two 18 footers to cover one 7'-4" post, that leaves enough offcuts to make some nice capitals.

Wonder what copper cladding would cost.

I doubt any metal wrap would look good for long, any post twist will show up as oil canning or wrinkled up, unless it is floated loose, and then it'll dent easily. I wouldn't do it.

I doubt copper posts are aestheticallly pleasing on most houses anyway.

What about granite?  It's a freaking rock folks!  Why spend so much?  Give me linoleum over pine planks for countertops.  It was good enough for my dear departed granny.

You didn't see the wink ?Dangit, you were supposed to play along. Now I'll NEVER convince the guy to put 4 different patterns of countertop laminate on each post and trim the corners with that pricey azek stuff...

            Yeh... That'll work.

You could make cladding from MDO.

I've put up a few miles of this company's railings.

    http://fairwayvinyl.com/accessories.htm

They have 4x4 sleeves, 5x5 sleeves, and 6.5x6.5 sleeves.  They also have vinyl post wraps in 6x6.

The 6.5x6.5" sleeves are $127 for 108", the wraps are $70 for 8 feet.

I order the stuff from UBS, and local yard.

I installed three 6X6 PVC post covers this past week in Virginia. They were made by a company called LB Plastics out of Mooresville, NC. They were 8' 6" long and are also available in 10'. They came in four pieces and snapped together very easily. No screwing or nailing. The ones I used were fluted, but they are available smooth and in four colors. The product line is named Sheerline. They cost $64.43 each plus the top trim which added $7.73. You can check them out on the web under pvc railings. I was very satisfied with the product.

I'll pass on the retro bar booth laminates for now, but there's some good links in the replies and several products I wasn't aware of.  Thanks.
