Looking to work for a stairbuilder in MN, around the TC area. More specifically, a stair FINISHER. I have a little experience finishing stairs as a helper, and alot of experience in framing and finishing. (been a Carpenter for 7 years).
I have my own tools and am a hard worker. I would be looking for FT or PT depending on what you need.
Please contact me via the e-mail feature on this site. I will also try to check back here if you decide to post a response.
Thanks!

Thank you. I'm just gonna keep bumping this until the right people see it!
Well I hate to say it but this is one instance that filling out some data in your profile might help you. Age, etc.
be a ...*cough cough*... profiler
I was thinking the specifics could be covered in a phone call ...but if it helps, I'm 29.
C'mon folks, Peyton Manning is a free agent here!
Continual bumping does not do any good other than make you look desperate. That only makes it look "new" to the people that have already seens it 10 times already. It will always be new to those that have not seen it yet.
I just bump it to make it show momentarily on the 'start' page, where everyone see's it. If you've read it it should show up as an already clicked link to you.
And yes, Peyton Manning is desperate! I NEED to trim stairs! I will never surpass Norm Abrams knowledge unless I learn them.
Besides, stairs are beautiful and are one of the pinnacles of my profession.

SPHERE, are you suggesting I go to WW for a job? Nice post pal. ...And to think I endured YOUR freezing house sob story like so many other people here, and actually had sympathy for you, only to find out you're a JERK. Nice...
You see, I have a job, and I'm happy. I'm doing fine for myself. But what if I didn't? What if I was someone desperate for work so his family could eat? How would you feel about yourself then tuff guy? You're so cool SPHERE. Just the Breaktime pimp I bet you are.
Happy Holidays to you also, and stay warm!

Yeah, having fun. Woo Hoo! I think I'll just stay in tonight and celebrate New Years here on Breaktime. Yeah, that's it. I'll sit here and tell people to stop posting in topics I'm not interested in, and maybe someone will even think I'm cool in the process! Awesome! You sir can have your Wally World, I've got Breaktime!

J20/20,
You probably just lost any interest from a prospective employer you may have had with that last barrage of insults you posted.
Being new to this forum you probably aren't aware that comments along the line you just took are not looked favorably on by the Breaktime regulars or the Moderators.
It would be wise of you to refrain from future insults if you wish to continue here.
rez,
I have to agree with you completely.
I just read all 21 posts consecutively and the young man made at least 4 big mistakes that make him appear to be completely un-desirable as an employee.
1) Would not take the direct hint about how annoying the " bump" idea is
2)Looking for a job---but won't give any detailed info about himself---apparently expecting potential employers to come courting " hat in hand". His handling of these first 2 issues seem to suggest an unwillingness to learn and to take instruction with a smidgin of "know it all"------not traits endearing to potential employers
3)Almost certainly read something into Spheres suggestion that simply wasn't there(I took Spheres' comment to mean" Relax---chill out, take a vacation or something, these things take time" Employment at Walmart never entered my thinking untill the young dude brought it up
4)Went ballistic in a hurry over absolutely nothing
I almost, kind of , feel sorry for the guy. In the real world he might very well be an EXCELLENT employee and a talented craftsman------but it's almost like he went out of his way to portray himself un-favorably in this thread.
Stephen
Ditto about the Walmart comment.Who Dares Wins.
exactly, I meant SHOPPING...chill out.I remember riding a bike 20 miles ONE WAY looking for a job when I was 12. I'd never think to sit on my butt and hope for someone to offer me a job. That's what applications and resume's are printed for.

I'm hoping that the whole thing can be attributed to the inconsistencies of cyber communication and the way a comment can be read with it's meaning going several different ways.
It might have been easy to follow Sphere's wallyworld comment with a return insult if his first impression of the post was getting an off the wall stab from someone seemingly coming out of the clear blue.
The general tone of his posts before were comrade in nature and I'm thinking it's all a misunderstanding.
Hope so.
I didn't misunderstand anything. He proceeded to prove his arrogance with an attitude of contempt.

Ha, here is a case in point, funny in that it immediately follows the posts in question now formed as an exampled situation.
It might have been easy to follow Sphere's wallyworld comment with a return insult if his first impression of the post was getting an off the wall stab from someone seemingly coming out of the clear blue.
However they meaning I was attempting to convey was:
It might have been easy to follow Sphere's wallyworld comment with a return insult if his (J20/20's) first impression of the post was getting an off the wall stab from someone seemingly coming out of the clear blue.
And I was attempting to be precise in the post. Roar!
See how easy it is for thoughts to be inaccurately communicated as my lack in accurate definition demonstrated here.
Thus my hope that the whole thing is just an miscommunication and all is well.
Always too easy to go the other way.
Now, where the H*LL is my fresh bagel with veggie cream cheese?

Alright, my gut tells me that if I'm serious about finding a job on here, I should just let this post die and not say anything further.
But because ultimately this is a discussion forum, and because I wouldn't want a prospective employer to think that I agree with some of the comments here, I will explain myself a little bit.
"I just read all 21 posts consecutively and the young man made at least 4 big mistakes that make him appear to be completely un-desirable as an employee."
“1) Would not take the direct hint about how annoying the " bump" idea isâ€
I got the direct hint, and dismissed it just the same. I’m not compelled to change because some anonymous person in cyber space says it’s an inconvenience to him. Sorry, I’m just not. Does this make me a bad potential employee? Maybe, but maybe not.
“2)Looking for a job---but won't give any detailed info about himself---apparently expecting potential employers to come courting " hat in hand". His handling of these first 2 issues seem to suggest an unwillingness to learn and to take instruction with a smidgin of "know it all"------not traits endearing to potential employersâ€
I will give all the information a prospective employer wants, but I’d rather not post my life story, or get into a lot of details in a public forum. That’s just the way I am. …But that doesn’t mean I won’t eventually get around to updating my profile...
I’m certainly not expecting “employers to come courting hat in hand.†I was thinking a simple “Hello, I noticed your interest on Breaktime and we might be looking for someone…†would do. Maybe I’m off base here, thinking that might happen. It is somewhat unorthodox, but it’s interesting trying.
It’s a stretch to say I’m unwilling to learn because I didn’t listen to the guy’s profile suggestion. Again, consider the source. (See: anonymous person in cyber space). I’m not saying anonymous people in cyber space make bad suggestions, but they aren’t my boss or mentor either. And I don’t know it all, don’t act like I do, and never will. In fact I find myself biting my tongue (in public) more often than not for the sole purpose of NOT seeming like a know-it-all. Just the way I am.
“3)Almost certainly read something into Spheres suggestion that simply wasn't there(I took Spheres' comment to mean" Relax---chill out, take a vacation or something, these things take time" Employment at Walmart never entered my thinking untill the young dude brought it upâ€
I don’t mind saying you’re completely off base here, suggesting I’M the one who's reading something into what he said. I took his comment at face value. I was posting for a stair job, and he told me to “go to Wally World or something.†No mention of anything about going shopping or taking a vacation.
"4)Went ballistic in a hurry over absolutely nothingâ€
This isn’t entirely an unfair statement. I chose to engage him when I could’ve let it slide, but ballistic, no. I’ve see ballistic posts, and I know what ballistic looks like. My point was to call out an Internet tuff guy for his COMPLETELY THOUGHTLESS comment. It wasn’t really personal for me, but I was a little disgusted that the guy posting that was the same guy who extracted a lot of sympathy from me only a couple weeks ago.
Alright, so that's where I'm coming from. I don't expect everyone to agree with me but thanks for all your advice.
Stephen H, thanks for suggesting that I might be an excellant employee and talented craftsman. I like to think of myself as both of them.
SPHERE, If you're saying you didn't mean what you said, or that what you said isn't what you meant, and that you meant something else, then we're cool. Just please don't act like I had no reason to think you meant I should go to Wally World for a job. The place is fictional anyway.
PEACE!
If you're not willing to change your profile for an "annomyous person" on the internet what makes you think someone will take the time out of their schedule to call an annymous person to offer them a job?
Jon Blakemore
Hey Jon. Your question might be a rhetorical one, not sure, but here goes. This isn't a formal job inquiry. There aren't rules (that I'm aware of) dictating how to post a work wanted ad here. I agree 100% that any extra info helps, including a profile, but it's not likely that someone serious will hinge their decision to contact me on wether or not my profile is filled out. ...It's about priorities. I tend to believe they're looking for good employees, not necessarily good Breaktime profiles.
That said, the question wasn't really about wether or not I have a profile. Stephen was questioning my ability to take instructions, and my reply was simply that I don't necessarily take instructions from anonymous cyber authors, but that I WAS getting around to filling one out (it's done now).
Hope this takes out a little of the confusion for you. Thanks for the interest and help.
J20/20,
You would have been better off letting this drop
or, at least
taking any one of the helping hands people offered you to HELP you turn this around.
I would suggest you take a few days off from posting-----and then come back and re-read all your comments at one sitting.
Remember----you kind of announced to the world that you were looking for a new job and it would make sense to package yourself in an attractive manner.
With a calmer, less abrasive attitude and a little finese you could have done almost exactly as you pleased and potential employers would have thought you were a polite, skilled young man----eager and able to learn---and a credit to their organization.
Instead----they are kind of left with the suspicion that hiring you would mean bringing someone aboard that will involve dailey arguments and hostile behavior.
imagine the different apperarance you could have generated when the hint was made regaurding the 'bump"--------you could have simply kept your mouth shut---made no posting that day----then a day or two later come back and replied to the" hinter"-----" thanks for the info----I wasn't aware of that"
bingo---ya just got your bump-----and you appear gracious.
and----when the suggestion about the "profile" was made-----you could have done the same thing a day or so later----responded to the poster politely and said something like" I am in my late 20's, I have been doing carpentry work for 7 years,5 of them with the same employer, mostly remodeling work,---recently I have been in a few houses with these absolutely fantastic stairways and I would love to learn to build similar projects"
bingo---ya just got another bump----and you gave yourself an intriguing 10 second advertisement----instead of an irritating rant
also-----when you complain about anon. internet posters-------YOU don't know them---but each person who responded to your thread was a long time regular here(we all knew them)----many of them might have potential contacts for you.
It's as if you showed up at a contractors shop one morning for an interview and in the parking lot a couple of guys were sitting on their tailgates drinking coffee and waiting to punch in. One of them suggests" hey---if you are here about the job opening---what ever you do--don't wear that Pittsburg Steelers hat in there----The boss HATES the Steelers"-----and YOU respond"up yours, I don't know you, I don't have to take your suggestion"
Well, duh---do you think those coffee drinkers might possible already be employed by the company you are trying to get hired by???????
Like it or not----you essentially filled out a job application here-----for a job that YOU want to LEARN a lot from. Instead of showing an eagerness to learn and portraying yourself as a pleasant person to be around----you went out of your way to IMPLY just the opposite
and finally----a couple of guys STILL tried to salvage the situation for you by pointing to the vagaries of internet communications---and you STILL wouldn't take the hint.
I don't know much about stairbuilding---but that kind of attitude would cost an employer A LOT OF MONEY.
Why take the chance
Best wishes to you, Stephen

pointing to the vagaries of internet communications
vagaries.
You made me take out the trusty dictionary.
Had the general meaning from the way it was portrayed in the sentence but you know one must follow thru.
vagaries.
Now if I can just find a rhyme for it without involving Oreo's tail...
be always learning
"You would have been better off letting this dropor, at leasttaking any one of the helping hands people offered you to HELP you turn this around."
Like I said here, I'm just engaging in the discussion. Nothing to drop here. This is my topic, that I initialized, and it's about me. Sorry that after being insulted, teamed up on, and greatly condescended to by a PEER, that my posts don't smell like roses to you. Also, forgive me if the "help that's been offered" appears more to me like a couple buddies sticking up for one of their own...
"Remember----you kind of announced to the world that you were looking for a new job and itwould make sense to package yourself in an attractive manner."
Very good advice, can't argue with that.
"imagine the different apperarance you could have generated when the hint was maderegaurding the 'bump"--------you could have simply kept your mouth shut---made no postingthat day----then a day or two later come back and replied to the" hinter"-----" thanks for theinfo----I wasn't aware of that"
That approach certainly crossed my mind, but I chose a different one. I decided not to beat around the bush. I was going in head first, and didn't have a problem saying it.
"and----when the suggestion about the "profile" was made-----you could have done the samething a day or so later----responded to the poster politely and said something like" I am in mylate 20's, I have been doing carpentry work for 7 years,5 of them with the same employer, mostly remodeling work,---recently I have been in a few houses with these absolutely fantasticstairways and I would love to learn to build similar projects"bingo---ya just got another bump----and you gave yourself an intriguing 10 secondadvertisement----instead of an irritating rant"
You've listed yet another alternative. The guys profile advice was noted, but how in Gods name is, "I was thinking the specifics could be covered in a phone call" an irritating rant?? Seriously man?Let's be honest here Stephen, you weren't irritated until sometime between when I called out your buddy SPHERE, and when I shot down your four presumptuous points about me.
"also-----when you complain about anon. internet posters-------YOU don't know them---buteach person who responded to your thread was a long time regular here(we all knewthem)----many of them might have potential contacts for you."
I'm sorry if it seemed like I was complaining, but I won't apologize for the way I process advice given by complete strangers on the Internet.
"It's as if you showed up at a contractors shop one morning for an interview and in the parkinglot a couple of guys were sitting on their tailgates drinking coffee and waiting to punch in. One ofthem suggests" hey---if you are here about the job opening---what ever you do--don't wearthat Pittsburg Steelers hat in there----The boss HATES the Steelers"-----and YOU respond"upyours, I don't know you, I don't have to take your suggestion"
This is just plain funny to me. ...Now you're assuming I can't differentiate between person to person advice in a REAL interview, and advice given in a PEER TO PEER conversation between strangers on the Internet. Who died and made you the boss anyway? And who did I say screw you and up yours to??Besides, I wouldn't be wearing a hat at an interview. If I did it would be a Vikings cap, and if the boss didn't like it, I WOULD SAY SCREW YOU. (kidding)
"Like it or not----you essentially filled out a job application here..."
Stephen, as much as you want this to be a job application, or an invitation for you to post your ASSUMPTIONS about me, it isn't. I expressed my interest in a few words, and asked potential employers to e-mail me. It is what it is. Get over it.
"and finally----a couple of guys STILL tried to salvage the situation for you by pointing to thevagaries of internet communications---and you STILL wouldn't take the hint."
Nothing to salvage. Rez pointed out the limitations of written communication. There wasn't any "hint" to take.
Now go on and post how a potential employer wouldn't want me because I insulted you. As if the way I'm dealing with YOU can somehow be related to how I deal with my boss and fellow employees. Pleeeease! You see, some of your pompous remarks could've been avoided if you didn't think that somehow you are superior to me. News flash you're not. At best you're my equal, until proven otherwise. ......and please no, I have absolutely no interest in hearing what your credentials are!
If you really want to help me you'll fight whatever it is that compels you to post in this topic. You don't own this forum.
Good banter fellas. Now let's go in at halftime and work on showing some class.
Bumpity, bump bump.
I am not a potential employer for what you seek but I am an employer...
I can spot your type a mile away .......

"...you will not work with a team..."
How would you PRESUME to explain the last 28 years of my life, and all the friends I've made and our accomplishments WORKING WITHIN A TEAM?
That said there's leaders and followers, A and B personalities. Both have their advantages, but I'm definately the former.
"The Breaktime crew really did try to help you BTW"
Never doubted that for a second. This started when one of the "regulars" here took a blatent stab at me out of the blue. My alleged unwillingness to take advice is just ratallitory propaganda by a few of his "regular" buddies who now are appearantly holding me in contempt.
"You would never get close to one of my crews..."
I wouldn't be looking to work closely with more than 1 or 2 people at any given time anyway.
Thanks for your constructive comments though, team guy. I'm sure you just made a couple friends here...
J20/20,
LOL
each of your posts reinforce my points.
However
in the spirit of magnanimity-----------please let me offer my services in sorting through the dozens of wonderfull job offers that are surely cascading into your mailbox.
Best wishes,
Stephen
Stephen, I think we're clashing because we're talking about two completely different approaches to courting employers here.
Your approach is the traditional one. It's generally the best one. It's what your comments were geared towards, and they were all very good. None of your points went unnoticed, trust me.
Some of your advice doesn't apply to the approach I'm trying though. Mine is the "get noticed on the internet" approach. The theory I'm trying here involves getting noticed, and if engaged, showing that I can respond (defend myself?) with some semblance of intelligence.
It's the "explain your reasoning when challenged, and show the light bulb is on" approach.
In my approach, humility and patience (in the message board sense) take a back seat to accountability and determination. These two fundamental differences are why I believe we're at odds. They're two completely different mind sets.
I'm posting this to create some diplomacy between us, and some understanding of myself. After rereading my posts it's easy to see how I could be mistaken for someone who 'just doesn't get it.' I've spent a fair amount time refuting incorrect assumptions about me, and haven't really given a core explanation.
(Also, for potential employers out there, I just ask that my tact here be viewed in the context of the way this thread progressed.)
That said, someone did send me an e-mail today. It came this afternoon so I can't help wonder if it was a direct result of your last "bump" :-)
It was from a builder looking for a punch-out guy. I'm very grateful for the offer but he doesn't have a lot to offer in the way of stairs.
The search continues...
Take Care.

Man, I just love bagels. ;o)
I have casually watched this thread roll along, and I finally could not resist throwing my support to the many (especially Sphere and Haz) who have tried (apparently in vain), to give you some useful advice. You seem to believe that a cabal of the regulars are ganging up on you. I'm one of the low men on the totem pole around here -- in terms of participation as well as construction knowledge, lest you think I am joining my "buddies" to gang up on you. Offended is too strong a word, but, like most others here, I have certainly been put off by the tact you have taken and the tone you have chosen. People are trying to be diplomatic (esp. Haz), and you respond by striking back -- which in my book makes you clueless. You may want to consider taking some time to reassess your interpersonal communication skills. Perhaps your skill set is getting you to where you want to go in real life (and I have my doubts on this), but they're sure not doing much for you around here.
AAAGH!! This is painfull!! j20 seems like an okay charictor who is probably gifted in many ways as a carpenter but unfortunatly NOT gifted as a writer, and because of that he is in-advertantly offending and or irritating to some.Lets talk about somthing else...Howabout.. Rez! he's weird lookin!-->

Gentlemen,
It appears J20/20 is receiving an initiation into Breaktime and all is well. I hope he hangs on and becomes a regular.
However, his Peyton Manning won't be able to hold the torch against this years steelers. They got the real thing goin'.
24-17.
Now, if we really want to get J to see 20/20, what he needs is to star in a new novella. That'll oughtta really get his blood pumpin'.
What say ye all? Vote here. A novella. Yea or Nay?
What say ye all? Vote here. A novella. Yea or Nay?
Isn't that what this thread has been? Mystery, intrigue, conflict, resolution. Sounds like the basics of a good book to me. And the main character is a carpenter (oop, sorry, stairbuilder!) What could be better than that?
Don't forget drama! Every good story's got that! :-)
J20
Contrary to what others here have suggested I would, if I were looking for help, give you a shot. I have built a few stairways in my day and just as Sphere is of his work, I'm very proud of mine as well.
I have always liked the argumentative kind, sorta reminds me of my self. I came on this forum and butted heads with Piffin right off the bat so I see where your at. There is nothing wrong with being argumentative.
I respect what Steve Haz. has to say on here, same as some of the others that have responded to you. Most of them are just trying to be helpful, actually all of them are. Chill out a bit!
I was going to wait until after this weekends game before responding to this but couldnt hold off any longer.
Probably the one thing that might keep me from hiring you would be that statement that you made about the Minn. Vikings hat, as a GB fan there would just be some things that could not be tolerated on my work site! ;>)
Theres a wealth of info on here, great people too. Don't let a little harsh rhetoric get under your skin.
Doug
Alan Roberson had put the kids in bed for the third time and finally was able to log on to breaktime. His interest was piqued not by the title but by the 74 posts that had been made on a job seeker thread. As he read down the posts, an idea began to crystallize in his brain... a new way to relate to the customer..... a completely different approach to customer service.... even a different way of advertising! Forget about this silly catering to the customer! You can toss out these hoary concepts of common courtesy! Don't even think of returning phone calls!!! Just get into stupid silly arguments on the internet and you'll
attract all the customers you need!!! woot woot! I could franchise this and make millions, he thought, I could NEVER HAVE TO BE POLITE TO ANYBODY EVER AGAIN!! But then he ran a style analysis on the instigator and realized it was another incarnation of Helen Wheels. Shucks.Well, it was a good idea while it lasted. Now if I could just find someone to help me with installing the staircase in that 4 story mansion next week...
Seriously guys... BACK OFF ! This guy's gonna be workin for ME! Don't be moving in on the only decent help to poke his nose in the door for months! So... J20/20 ... how are you at snow shoveling anyways?

The Rude approach to customer service DOES work. Just ask all my repeat customers... and people they've referred!
Seriously though, shoveling snow is instinctive to Minnesotians. We're all good at it wether we know it or not. ...ain't no snow to shovel here though. Just colder than H-E-L-L!
Doug,
Your message was a breath of fresh air. If you had the ideal job I'm looking for I'd seriously consider driving to Cheeseland every day.
Vikings 34, Packers 24
J20
Sorry I don't live in Cheeseland, wish I did, I'm down here at the bottom of the USA, in TX.
I hope your wrong about the game this weekend but unfortunately I do not have as much confidence in my Pack as I once did.
However I have less confidence in the Vikes and their coaching staff. I have always liked the idea of Denny Green and now Tice, with those two you could always figure they were never going to be all that good. :)
Doug
Doug, I hear ya about the coaching staff. McCombs is a cheap bas****. He actually renewed Tice's contract after week 15, with the possibility of not making the playoffs still looming.
That just shows he's too cheap to go after one of the better prospects out there. ...Tice is the lowest paid in the league BTW. ..and the Vikings were 33 mil under the cap this year. Also the most in the league.
With that kind of spending power we could easily have the best team of the decade.
V-I-K-I-N-G-S!
Doug,
Moss sent you a message down in TX after his 2nd TD. Did you get it?
:-)
ya I got the message!
We'll see if he's as happy a fellow when he plays Philly, they have a real defence.
BTW do you Minn. fans even like the guy?
Doug
Doug, that's a funny thing. People around here who don't like him are few and far between. He doesn't get along with the media people very well at all though. It's a wierd deal.
His jersey sales are around tops in the NFL. That's gotta say something.
I got a lot of friends in Ia. who are Minn fans, I dont hear any of them say any thing good about Moss, Not a single one.
I bet if you did the demographics on the sales of those Moss jerseys you'd be surprised at who is buying them.
I dont think Moss or the Vikes will fare to well against Philly, they, unlike the Pack, have a decent defence. And Philly fans are not near as nice as cheeseheads!
Doug
Doug,
I agree Philly fans can be the worst but they are'nt our bitter rivals either. ...I don't expect the environment in Philly to be any worse than Lambeau.
As far as the match-up this weekend, you're right about the Packers "D" not being as good as Philly's, but Philly's "O" is nowhere near the Packers either.
I think it'll be a classic match-up of a good D VS. a good O, and a bad O VS. a bad D.
The Eagles are listed as 10 point favorites, and that's about enough to make a bettin man outta me.
Infact, I'd bet that 10 points looks more like 6 by the end of the week.
Should be a good one either way!
Airight you got me. What's a novella?
Well see if a vote tallies forth first.

Well, no interest so you've been spared ;o)

Rez,
Thanks for keeping things together on this thread. I've seen you do it on other threads and I think your efforts to keep things from getting out of hand is commendable.
That said, the Manning comment was just a reference to his work ethic, I'm actually a Big Ben fan. If it was up to me it be Steelers and Vikes in the SB.
For the Vikings it'll be a tuff road. The only thing we know for certain is they will beat the Pack this weekend.
YOWZA!
Ya, how can someone not be a BigBen fan seeing a rookie quarter headin' for the supe like that?
Only thing better is seeing him traded to the Brownies next year.
Come on rez, how much would it really help if the Browns had Ben R?
He'd been beat up and out of football by now.
Sad but true.
nikkiwood,
Good point about my tact. I edited my last post to address it.
Good luck with your construction aspirations.
Wow.I will only respond to one thing. I'm sure S. Hazlett can take care of himself.Your first statement>>>>"Like I said here, I'm just engaging in the discussion. Nothing to drop here. This is my topic, that I initialized, and it's about me. "Whether you like it or not, this forum (or this thread) is not about you. What makes this community so great is the collection of people that are willing to contribute advice as well as ask questions. It's give and take.I'm sure you will find most of the regulars here very forgiving but we all have our limits. You're pushing a lot of buttons which make you unappealing to most of the regulars and, I would guess, most potential employers.Stay a while. Aspire to be on the level of Stan Foster, Jerrald Hayes, and Armin. Not the other end of the spectrum, LM.

20/20,
I've been on this board for close to two years now, and can attest to you that the guy's here ARE NOT just screen names in cyberspace. More than a few have gone out of there way to do personal favors for me and/or take time to research for info (without my asking).
After reading though this entire thread, IMO, you came here as a newbie, and arrogantly ticked the regulars off. You will find the people here very forgiving. So tuck your tail between your legs, fill out a profile, and good luck in the new year....
Oh, and stick around, you just might learn something.

Thanks Gunner. I'm gonna try that. I've actually been hanging out on JLC for a few years. Just having fun here trying to get some takers via the internet (but I AM SERIOUS). ..One of these days I'll probably bust out the yellow pages and start a callin'.
Happy Holidays.

It's ok man, after all, I don't exist..it's all cyber ( read kidding about that part, the cyber that is).
In all honestness, I have built a staircase for Alice Walton..now not the pillar of sanctimony, she was a high profile customer. That ALONE fed the fire for more work for me. if ya don't know, she is Sam Wal-Mart. Waltons daughter..hence my quip to you...I feel like that maybe i thought you KNEW who you were dealing with..no, I did not read your profile ( as it appeaeread at that that time).
Let me have a comfy, feely time here for a minute of your time. I was sought out and recruited to do that job, I had MAYBE built a half dozen stairs prior to that..I did good work, and got a good reputation by being more than a stairbuilder, just a damn talented wood artist.
I truly hope you find a gig like that..for one thing, it'll humble you a notch or two ( my take only) and enlighten you to the "right time, Right place" mentality..
Your "bumping" appeared to me as fruitful as pushing a rope..I apologize to reiterate the previous warning to you.
Trust in the universe, if yer meant for the job, you will be summoned..ya can't force it.
And as a parting kiss, I never "extracted" your symphony or sympathy..you must have volunteered it unknowingly. I certainly have have not recieved any from you in a fashion that I can comprehend or use..where is it?
I do hope the job finds you..I fear that the hunt may not equal the porridge that you consume in it's quest..after all, you admit, little knowledge in the trade.
Be well, have a good time between the risers.
If you care to look, I can post a pic of what NOT to build, more than once. Interested? BTW, ya can't be a "high end" stairbuilder in a static location..it requires a lot of travel.
no bad feelins here..just support for your quest.

SPHERE, when I read your story I didn't post that I was sympathetic to you. I envisioned a guy curled up in the fetal position on floor shivering his azz off next to a laptop in a half finished house with the elements pouring in and a sick dog. Moral was low and I was wondering if there was anything I could do. That is pretty much the extent of my sympathy.
As far as my knowledge of the trade, if you're calling stair finishing a separate trade (I personally consider it an aspect of the carpentry trade) then my knowledge IS limited. I've done a few fairly easy runs in tract houses, and 1 big one as a helper in the common of a huge apartment building.
As far a carpentry goes, I started off framing at 14 during the summers for my neighbor. I got into sales and college after high school for a couple years before getting back into carpentry, again as a framer. After 4 years of framing I got into finishing and for the most part have been an 'indoor' carpenter ever since (doors, windows, trim, cabinets, built-ins, etc.). Last winter I went off on my own. I had a few jobs lined up, the first one being a mahogany bar and library in someone's house. I built a few decks over the summer and have managed to stay plenty busy through referrals.I've lead framing carpenters and trained finish carpenters.
That said, I'd like to learn to be proficient at stair finishing, and am willing to give up the freedom (and $) of being self-employed to do so.I'm not looking to get with a company just so I can learn and then ditch them. I plan on being a carpenter until I can't do it anymore, and stairs are something I see myself doing for a long time.
So that's a little more about me. Just thought I'd post this in case there was any confusion about my experience. Please, if anyone feels the urge to criticize, it's not appropriate. You wouldn't want someone doing it if you were trying to find a job.
Thank You.

Roar! Ya, that was my first impression too. Too funny. What a visual.
That was up until the post about the piano. Put the kabosh on those thoughts when he went bangin' on the old piano.

That is pretty funny. How about the visual of the poor dog getting zapped? ....dude scrambling down a ladder, water spraying everywhere, dog crappie flopping on the basement floor, sparks flying out of the wall... oh the craziness.

Your statement is neither right nor wrong. Carpenters build cabinets as well but cabinetmaker is considered by most a seperate trade. It really depends on what you call stairbuilding. If you want to site build stairs using off the shelf parts, cut them with a skill saw, nail them together then yes they are carpenter built stairs. If you preassemble stairs in a shop, deliver a finished product to the jobsite, reassemble and everything fits and you do this full time then you are a stairbuilder. Stan Foster does this and I consider him as good as they come. I take it one more notch and prefinish all my products before delivery plus build the entire staircase starting with rough sawn lumber including the complicated turnouts and fittings. You sound like you have some pretty good skills, don't let it go to your head. As for time spent in the trades if you are counting what you built as a kid I have you beat by over 50 years, plus formal training, plus a phd from the school of hard knocks. Best be patient, true craftsman are honed by time, and learning from others.

SPHERE,
Moss will be bringing his message to you next week!
Armin, I believe that's the second time someone has referred to Stan Foster. I could only hope to work with someone like that.
...And you building staircases from rough sawn lumber??!?!
Only in my dreams.
If you are interested check out my website, http://www.northernsunwoodworks.com Currently we are bidding on a curly birch staircase going to Ely Minn sometime this summer, sort of in your neck of the woods.
Armin, I'd absolutely love to help with that. Ely is a hike for me but I might have a nice place for us to stay on the lake. I'll be in touch.
Armin, lemme know if you go up to ely, have some family in chisholm........you won't get better sausage anywhere. My uncle Al had a sign behind the counter..........."everything but the squeal"

Thought I'd bump ya. One more post to 100!
J-- I don't know if I would want to work with you, our egos might clash. My own head sometimes barely fits through doorways, with two of us trying to pass, we might get stuck!
But, I hope you find what you are looking for, and stick around here a while. I've learned an incredible amount from these old farts over the past 5 years or so, about construction and otherwise. You will too.
Thanks man! I think we'd fit though. Just go through one at a time. :-)
I visit new home job sites several times a day and constantly meet contractors/builders. often they ask me for help finding workers..
E-mail me and I'll carry your resume with me should I be asked.. it would help if you have pictures to display (of your work,...not your face ;>)

Thanks frenchy! I lost the last version of my computerized resume so give me a little time to get something typed up.
Thanks!
I too was intrigued by 78 posts in the help wanted section ....

Hey Sphere ... I'da told ya to shove it harder ya tell me to go to wally world ... to work or shop! And how in the world is anyone supposed to get a reference to work that U did? That .. and ... I don't care who's steps ya drop clothed!
Then my favorite ... when the guy tried to say something about "his thread" ...
suddenly it's not his thread anymore because this isn't his website?
Girls ... please .... the holiday dinners may have snuck up on ya ... I'd suggest a trip to WalMart for some looser panties .... I'm thinking the ones yer wearing now are just a tad too tight ...
btw ... in case anyone forget .... kids ...
we are just a bunch of yahoo strangers typing nonsense into the internet!
I'd hire the guy ... shows he ain't afraid of fighting with a school yard click of preteen girls .... that's gotta be worth something. And really .... "tried to help you" ... no one her tried to help the guy ... just wanted to argue that their point was right ... like I'm doing right now ....

Hope it grows.

Armin and others.....I have just been too freakin busy the last 6 months to post much here. What little time I have had left I used on flying my gyrocopter.
Armin...I just started reading this thread and thanks so much for the kind comment....but in all reality the work I have seen you post intimidates me.....but also motivates me to try even harder to reach your level. Then...when I think I may be getting close...you post something freakin more awesome. I am going to call you the "Intimidater" not the laminater...:)
20/20....My advice...just take on more and more challenging jobs and do them well. The work will be beating your door down. You have to have people skills....roll with the punches...always surprise the customer by doing more than you promised. Never down another competitors work....just worry about your own. Success will come your way.
Good luck
Stan
Stan strong post, you last paragraph is where I always try to live. I have gotten some of the most crazy, scary, and amazing jobs by having the balls to say ok Ill do that, and the willingness to sweat my way to a product that could make me cry. They dont come along all the time and they havent paid off yet, but when you give that level of commitment to even the small stuff... you do get noticed.
