All of these are out of your price range, but I use this website a lot when researching things. It's kind of like Consumer Reports, except free. It might help you out.

thanks... i'm still on the fence... i went through my warehouse and found about 8 new Kohler units... not top of the line but $150 or so retail... so i'm down to needing... about 36 more... I'll pick up one orion this weekend and hook it up and just see how it flushes... you can tweek a few things to get a little better flush so i'll play with it before i get 35 more...
thanks for the info

Toilet tune ups.........
Toto are pretty decent for their cheapo.
Toto is what water departments are usually giving out when they are trading for your old gas guzzler models.

I like Gerber.
I bought a Elijer Titan. Very impressed. Paid $200 at Menards. In the year we've had it , it plugged twice. Six folks flushing the toilet. Also it has a piss mode. A quick flush and you only half empty the tank

I'm sure this will be very helpful info for the original poster.
i think the problem with cheapies is that they are inconsistant. i have one some off beat mexico brand in a rental.that thing flushes like a old 7 gal one.if i had been paying attention i should of went back and bought a dozen of them. i think your method is about as good as it gets, buy 1 try it.
hd here has some 100. units marked to 49. so you might check them.
oh,you owe us a review on toliets when your done,i want to know the best for cheap out there also.
if i spend 600. on a flusher it better do more than flush good.

IIRC you don't like Home Depot...... but with that being said if you found a decent toilet you liked, tell the Contractor Desk to quote you 40 and send it to the Bid Room and I think you might be surprised at what you could get them for.
i thought about that... the HD bid room... thnk i posted 2 weeks ago when they had a bid room special for 12ga 500 ft rolls of wire pallet price $23rl shelf stock was still @ $55... today the shelf price is $40rl... you know they were make'n $ @ 23 so... not retail @40... don't know if they have that kind of room in toilets but... it is telling...
HD has several toilets in the $89 to $100 range... don't know if they can get to the $42 i was quoted on the ORION...plus $1 for the wax .79 bolts & $4.79 for the seat... then they will give me a 5% discount off that total...
I'll pick one up in the morning... hook it up.. and see what i can figure out to do to "TEST" it..... Gunner.... where is Gunner when you need him

You know when I use a toilet, I don't think I notice how much it costs. But there are a couple of things that bug me that maybe could be avoided on even a cheap toilet. Bowl size: the larger and more elongated the better. the smallest ones just seem unsanitary, inconvenient and stupid. I don't think there is a problem with skinny people sitting on a slightly bigger bowl. Bowl hieght: too low just makes me feel like I'm in potty training, and i'm not even a very big guy. I'd like to move the market away from these 'bad' toilets.

Speaking of toilet peeves..There's a toilet design out there with the hole that the bowl drains from shaped into a square angle at the 12:00 position (if you're standing in front of the bowl looking down into it). The problem? Unless they start making plungers with a matching square angle included in their circumference, whenever you try and plunge such a toilet that right angle leaves an opening between the edge of the plunger and the bowl's drain hole that allows the contents of the bowl to be ejected straight upward at you when you push down with the plunger. What brain-dead design engineer didn't consider or didn't care about that?:(

Kohler Wellworth comes in well below your $200 threshold at regular pricing from HD. They look ok, no special parts for repairs and they work well.
Probably better pricing from HD for 40 of 'em - maybe even less at a wholesale plumbing supply.
i have checked everything on the net that i could find.... a gravity feed 1.6 gal toilet... seems to be a #### shoot (no pun) none stand out... and price doesn't seem to affect how well it performs... you can spend $400 or $40 (from published reports) and get equal performance... the only factor it seems that matters is flapper size (the size of the port at the bottom of the tank... 2" seems to be standard... but there 3" and 4" ones... if you are use'n 1.6 gallons... it's a toss up... a longer flush with a 2" or a fast short flush with 4"... pros to both....negs to both....
I have 2 upper end units at my house purchased/installed at the same time... one has always perfromed better than the other.... don't know why...
I'm going to play with one monday the $42 orion.... just to see...

I don't know just what to think when a guy says he's going to play with a toilet... :)BruceT

I think I pay my plumber about $125 for a Toto Drake, buying 3-4 at a time... 35 ought to get a great price for a trouble free hole in the floor.http://www.tvwsolar.com
I went down to the lobby
To make a small call out.
A pretty dancing girl was there,
And she began to shout,
"Go on back to see the gypsy.
He can move you from the rear,
Drive you from your fear,
Bring you through the mirror.
He did it in Las Vegas,
And he can do it here."
