Hello all,
Does anyone have any thoughts about Lowen windows? I was considering them for an addition project of mine. Also, how might they compair to the Marvin Integrity? I haven’t heard a lot about Lowen.
Thanks all,

Thanks all,
In older homes like these, the main remodeling goal is often a more welcoming, more social, and more functional kitchen.

I installed many triple pane Loewen windows and doors when I lived in the Southwest. They were the heaviest units I ever handled. The doug fir rails and stiles were very nice. Never had a call back.

Loewen windows are made in Winnipeg Manitoba and as folks have said, they are very well made. I installed all Lowewn in my house 10 years ago-no problems.I recently had a customer who asked me to repair a 20 year old crank out casement- an upper clip came off and the hinge came apart-I called Loewen-the hardware was available...I just needed the clip and I got it free from the local installer...the doug fir on the inside is awesome and being my own home I ordered
full depth jambs meaning no extextion jambs needed! we call them build-outs in canada.silver
Glad to hear it!

Actually, the plant is in Steinbach, Manitoba, about 50 minutes southeast of Winnipeg. Loewen is the cadillac of windows here. When the Cdn $$ was very low to the US $, they did most of their business in the states and had very little market share locally - too expensive. The Winnipeg Jeld-wen plant did most of the wood windows - they have now shut down that plant - right after Peachtree came to town.
I priced out our cottage windows with Loewen - came to $41K Cdn. We ended up with Marvin Integrity (& a few Marvin metal clad) for $30K Cdn. So far we are very happy with the Marvin, but it has only been a year. The installers had done plenty of Loewens, but never Marvins before and they felt the Marvins had nicer detail.
I do think the doug fir of the Loewens is a better choice if you want a nice, rich dark stain.
The metal flanges on Loewen windows are way, way better than the folded plastic flanges on the Integrity windows I just installed, and the Loewen flanges are actually complete around the corners, as opposed to the Integrity, which come with these goofy little corner pieces to make up the difference. That aside, the Integrity are very well priced and their frames look to me to be less likely to leak than the Loewens, which I have had leaks with. The fir on Loewens has always been reasonably nice but it's always mixed grain and the VG that we trim out with is nicer.
There's a small shop here in town that makes windows nicer than almost any I have seen. http://www.windowcraft-inc.com/
The windowcraft do look nice. You are right about the Marvin corner peices - a bit rinky dink. If my budget would allow for it, I would have done Loewen - but we are 4 years over schedule and you don't want to know how overbudget we are!
They are really nice,
The casements don't even have any swing hardware, just hinges. No crank handle. you just push it out as far as you want it. the representative told me the hinges were good to hold the window in place up to 40 mph. I installed a few copper clad lowens as well. They were probably the most expensive 29x29 window I will ever see.
You're talking about the push-out casements. They also make crank-out casement.
I think the push out casements are a special hardware order. I've always installed the crank out kind. They have some pretty cool special windows like the copper you mentioned. I priced the mahogany for my house. I thought how much more could it be, same hardware, glass, etc. only the wood was different. About double!! John
