   LP Smartside is a composite siding that's probably similar to the Masonite Woodsman siding we have. We've had excellent results with Benjamin Moore's semigloss exterior acrylic latex on the Masonite.

   A builder building in the same neighborhood as where I'm building is using LP smart side.  The siding is an OSB type product.  Maybe different components of it are masonite type stuff...

   OP: I'm not sure you will find info on long term paint performance on LP Smartside.  I think it has been out less than a year.

   Here is some pics I took at the job site...  I'd say it's an OSB product....  One thing that is nice about it is that it hangs flatter than Hardie.  On the down side the directions call for some pretty large end gaps.  I think it's 1/8th.  The builder said he was gonna have it caulked twice...  The fascia and soffit material had been laying out in the weather for 3 months.  It showed some minor degradation.... 

   It's got a strong warranty, but personally I wouldn't trust it, and although I'm into new methods and materials, I prefer not to be on the bleeding edge - but that is just me....

   When we did our house with Masonite we used the aluminum joints and corners, vs caulking. Still had to caulk around windows and doors, where the specs called for 3/16 or 1/8 (can't remember which). Had no trouble doing that in one "squeeze". The gaps in the picture look larger -- closer to 1/4".If I had to do it over I wouldn't change any of it -- the siding, the joints and corners, the paint -- all worked out well.

   I think the masonite type products are/were fine as long as they are installed, painted, and maintained properly.

   I think there were also several different products, some Masonite brand and some other brands, and durability differed between the products. The stuff we put up was so hard that we pre-drilled most of the nail holes.
