Hi all –
We have an old shed with T1-11 siding. We are planning to re-side the shed with LP SmartSide materials. Initially, we were thinking of removing the T1-11 and putting on SmartSide panel siding (or the LP smartside cedar textured shakes). For ease, I’m now wondering whether it would be fine to leave the old panel siding on the structure and install the smartside materials over it – primarily thinking about the shakes (would still remove the siding if we do the LP panel siding).
If it is ok to leave the old panel siding on as sheathing for the shakes, do we need to put on house wrap or some type of barrier, or can we put the LP shakes on directly?
Thanks!

If the T-111 is sound I would absolutely leave it. It adds more structural strength than planks or shakes ever will. You could probably nail/staple shakes right to it or the smartside over it.
It’s a shed, so don’t want to throw too much $ into the project. If existing siding is fine leave it and use it as sheathing. No need for a high performance house wrap as the temp and humidity levels between outside and inside will be close to the same. I would install something though just in case there is wind driven rain and water gets between the two layers. You may get a good deal on house wrap if you can find a damaged roll and ask for discount. Or can use good old roofing tar paper as well.
