Luka came down yesterday and we got his winch put together from scraps laying around the yard. He still needs to connect up the 1/2 HP vintage Crafstman motor, attach the old roll of 7/16 cable (DW says “you need to give away more of this junk”), chain the 8″ channel to a tree, and he is ready to go.
Quite a winch head, double worm gear drive, looks like 2000:1 or better ratio, v-belt drive should work OK, and Luka plans on taking the motor indoors at night to avid theft – hopefull when full of cable the winch will be heavy enough to “not try to walk off” by itself.
The weld pix is Luka free welding “behind his back”, my welding helmet too dark to for his tastes <G>

Looks like you and Jeff had a good day. Everytime I see pictures of your place, I think of how a guy could spend days out there tinkerin

I really had a good time !

You know, for those welding rods of yours, I'm surprised you haven't made up an airtight container, and put the rods in it, with a bag or two of that dessicant you have...
I want to say thanks for getting me back that close to welding again. To be honest, I have been kind of scared to try it again.
If my tiny 110v welder is still around here, I am going to try to weld some steel tubing the right size for 2x4's on the side of my utility trailer. That will give me a solid basis for building the box to hold the water barrels.
If I can accomplish that and do a good job of it. I will have no dearth of things I can do, once I can make my own jury-rigged tools and such...
And if anyone attempts to steal my funky looking, but great winch.... I'll just weld more heavy metal to it. LOL I think something like a car hood should slow them down. he he he

Looks like it oughta work. I did have a thought regarding speeds, which MIGHT be easily workable. You know how some drill presses and/or lathes have stepped pulleys to change speeds with?Like on the motor, there's a 4", 5", and 6" pulley. Then on the other shaft there's a 6", 5", and 4" pulley. (In reverse order)The point is, you switch the belt to dofferent pulleys to make the output shaft turn at different speeds. I wondered if you could rig up something similar for your winch, so you weren't stuck on one speed.
You get a canoe later and I'll paddle you.
That is already exactly the plan.: )Well, not exactly. The winch is geared to take so many turns to get a bit of revolution on the reel, that I have a larger pulley on the motor. And a step pulley on the winch. The step pulley will give me 3 different speeds. Starting at just slightly faster than 1 to 1. Hopefully the smallest will give about 2 and a half to 1.
