A customer wants me to build a pergola for him from LVL (for the ‘rafters’. His reasoning is that it is stronger and straighter. He’s aware of the costs. The entire structure will be painted. Does anyone know of any reason that LVL would not be suitable to this application? Thanks.

I don't know of any LVL's
I don't know of any LVL's rated for outdoor use. You can get pressure-treated Paralam beams though. Personally I would opt for sawn lumber, but if he wants engineered wood, find a source for treated Paralam.
I strongly suggest that you check with manufacture before you use them for this purpose.
You'll have a rough time
You'll have a rough time getting paint to hold on a LVL, the whole exterior is treated w/ a waxy finish to protect it from moisture. I would stick to a pressure treated material.
I've seen some LVL material
I've seen some LVL material that went punk after about a week's exposure to wet weather. Make sure whatever you get is rated for exterior use.
Seems like a waste of money to me. What does the customer think he's gaining by using an LVL? After all, it's just a pergola.
I recall seeing a LVL manufactured for outdoor use in a recent FH. I think they exist.
