The ridge beam of a covered carport is a flitch made w/ LVL’s and a 1/2″ steel plate. The ends of the beam are exposed. Should the ends be sealed and the steel caulked to keep out water?
Thankyou for your thoughts

The most common way to make your own parging mix is to use either Type S mortar for block or Type N for brick and add a concrete bonding additive.

I'd probably paint it witha good paint such as Duration or Permanizer, esp if you are coastal.

As far as I know, LVL's aren't graded for direct exposure to water, paint or no paint. Is there a way to cover the exposed end with a metal cap?
Beer was created so carpenters wouldn't rule the world.
I once left a cut-off chunk of LVL laying in the driveway for several days. It rained during that time and the LVL swelled up like a piece of cheap OSB.
Odd..I have scaffold planks that have been out doors for years and are just fine.
Not the PSL , true LVL.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Yeah, I suppose mine was PSL. But isn't that mostly what people call "LVL" these days?
In science it often happens that scientists say, "You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken," and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion. --Carl Sagan
I don't. PSL is PSL, LVL is LVL, and Para-Lam is Para-Lam.
Huge difference.
I may have mistakenly thought the OP was accurate in the designation.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Don't forget LSL.
Fortunatly I don't work with too much of any of that stuff, except LVL. setting some 25'ers x 11 and change next week. I get sore just looking at them.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Enough abreviated engineered products around these days to make my head spin. I like them, but man, it's tough keeping up with things. I'm pretty comfortable back yard engineering with glulams and dimensional lumber, but all these "_ _ L" products and I-joists take things to a whole new level.
Glad I got into the online reading habbit several years ago.
Of course, that took the place of my magazine reading habbit.
But still, there is more and more to keep up with these days than there ever was. Sure glad we have the internet to track down information, not to mention a place full of varied opinions like Breaktime.
I also got a crash course in steel not long ago..."w", "H" and "I" are NOT interchangeable..LOL
Tooka while with a plasma cutter to turn a W into an I..not my screw up thankfully, but what the Eng. was thinking is beyond me. Ever burn one inch off 4 flanges 27' long each? No fun when it's 90 degrees out already.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Holy hot pants, PlasmaBoy!I wonder if that cutting cut into the actual strength delivered, what with all the heat distortion and ragged edge....

Thats why we used Plasma, no distortion or warp.
And, the guy who insisted on steel, and got a free engineer, and screwed up the order 2x, did all the grinding. It is his home, his call..Ho wants to play GC, these things happen. LOL
It is fine, not much load, and I would would have( and suggested) 3 LVL with posts where there was posts holding up 3 full 2x10 syp for a built up beam..but to do that would make the previously non bearing posts , become bearing, requiring tearing up a brick patio and adding a footer. My suggestion when he balked about that was "don't include me in anything with out an Eng. then" He found some half baked guy that didn't even have a clue...what a CF all around.
I have since primed said beam, bolted on 2 layers of 2x6 ( so i have some place to nail all the trim and cornice) on each side, and a 2x6 on the top to hurricne tie the joist thats rest on it. So adding that build up in the web made it stiffer yet.
This guy is a hoot, he is sooooooooooooo particular, he gets in his own way, and is way over his head..but I show up, "Make it so" and invoice, I get paid, and repeat..LOL Hell , I've been there a year, and have many more to go if I can stand it.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

while you guys ruminate over sexy brioefs on engineered lumber products, my curiosity is wandering in a different direction today -
The Op said his ridge beam in in a covered carport. That left me to wondering if there is such a thing as an uncovered carport? can we refer to a driveway as a topless parking lot?
