Lvl ledger on Insulated Concrete forms
Looking for advice or experience for installing a lvl ledger to hang I joists between insulated concrete forms. Simpson makes a hanger that goes into the face of the concrete form or can I just hang the ledger with j bolts? the span of the I joists will be 22 feet , I have a bid for jaeger jsi 40 -14″, they have a 31/2″ bottom flange, will I be able to find joist hangers to fit a flange of this size? this project is a garage24xxx30 with a woodshop upstairs. thanks for any advice.

Here is a link (FREE) to the prescriptive manual for ICFs:
http://www.pathnet.org/sp.asp?id=1014
The bolt spacings etc. are outlined, as well as lots of other info.
The Simpsons hangers are the way to go, imho - much easier, faster, and very secure.
Jager will have the joist hangers for the job - sounds like a nice garage!
thanks brian for the info. I went to the web site and read the whole report. Excellent reading.Alot of the material is also in the manual I have for my ICF"s. I really liked the math calculations in the appendix. They specifiy a 2x ledger of #2 or better grade for the anchor bolt spacing.I will go with those specs for the spacing and apply them to the LVL that I will use. Looking forward to the time when the construction check list is all checked off and I can set up shop. thanks again. If anyone else has any more advice about bolting LVL ledger board to polysteel icfs please post. And /or if you have worked with Jaeger jsi 40 joists with the wide wood flange, love the hear from you. woodlady
woodlady - whoever sells you the I joists can get you the hangers. The great part about the hangers are if your ledger is level, your hangers go fast - they have a mini-flange on the top. Be certain to plan your joist layout so your ledger bolts don't interfere with your hangers.
I put a dab of foam in the bottom of each hanger before the joist goes in to avoid squeaks later.
Use the Simpson ICF ledger product, and your list will be checked off sooner!
Treat every person you meet like you will know them the rest of your life - you just might!
hi Brian thanks for the info, I have read alot of your other posts well into the wee hours of the night. One who shares his knowledge also shares the strengh of his heart.I will take all of your advice. I priced jbolts today. And at the needed 1/2" bolts (2) every 14" I would need 100 bolts for 56 feet of lvl seems like a lot of hole drilling for about $75 of j bolts. The simpson ICFVL run about $7 each , I need about $100 of those. Looks I can save lots of time if i go with the simpson hangers as you suggest. I am dealing with a local wholesaler of wood products for the I joists and they pass on hanger business to the local lumber yard. I will check with Jeager and see what they recommend for hangers for their joists. Sunny days ahead, might be able to get a cement truck up my mountian very soon and pour those blocks!
I'll third the Simpson ledger brackets. Stripping down the foam for use with J bolts is a pain.
thanks Idaho Don I did some price checking today and the difference between the J bolts and the simpson ICFVL's was about $25 more for the simpsons but they beat out the bolts in the time and ease of installation. You were right on with you suggestion.
