I am a remodelor/builder looking for a simple software package to help
design/draw residential elevations, wall cross-sections, decks, footings,
etc.. I have had no luck finding such a program. I have found incredibly
expensive and complicated programs that are far more than I want (or need).
I just want something to make somewhat professional yet simple drawings on.
Specifically, something between a basic art program and a bonafide
architecture CAD program. Any ideas? I am desp

Oh this takes me back, There used to be several packages for the Mac and went by the names of Generic CADD, Turbo Cad, Claris CAD, Corel Draw and Vellum and even AutoCad, There are now so many graphic programs that I think they have replaced these listed, If you could get your hand on Claris Cad or AutoCad (Mac) you would have a drafting program equal to the earlier/current window programs at a bargin price. Claris Cad is Claris Corporation, apple spin off made Mac/PC software, still do, get ahold of a old timer there and ask about Claris Cad. AutoCAD is Autodesk Corporation.
You really have no platform limitation because the newer Macs will run most windows software. Just inquire to the makers of a package that you want.
I'll think on this a while, it's coming back to me...in the fog.....
*Abracadata company makes architecture, estimating, landscaping software for Mac. Try http://www.abracadata.com/html/index99.html
*I'm always there for an Apple user...If your needs are 2-d and limited, you can't beat the German export CADintosh -- US$40.A very useful companion is a trackball like the Kensington Orbit with programmable buttons, so you can enter, cancel, click, etc. without the keyboard or long trips across the screen.
*I don't know if you'd consider it 'overkill', but VectorWorks (previously MiniCad) is an excellent CAD program. Check out http://www.diehlgraphsoft.com/. cheers,Scott.

As a Mac user, I made this decision last year when searching for software to design my new home. After checking out the mac consumer software, not the CAD programs, I chose Broderbund's 3D Home Architect and ran it using Virtual PC. Worked fine and it's easy to use. It's much better than the Mac products I tried.
*DenebaCAD (www.deneba.com) cannot be matched.
