It took me 30 days working by myself. Here is the framing.

Nice, got any shots looking back at deck & house from yard?
Thanks, try50772
Actually the deck is the back yard. The wife of the owner has seribal palsy and this deck will offer her a usefull out door living space. They are putting in a gas fire pit in the arbor area.
Here is the ramp to that area "Rather be a hammer than a nail"

Nice Bob. Good to see you still sticking your nose in here.

Thanks RW, I've been really busy, and not on the computer much other than working on deck designs.
Here's a shot of the arbor and privacy screen.

WOW!
That is some nice work...

Hi Imerc,
Thanks for the KUDO's
This deck is framed 12" on center with all stainless steel fasteners and hardware.
The Trex rail system was a pain because each baluster had to be pre-drilled and screwed with hardened steel star drives.
You can't gun nail these puppies because they are so dense."Rather be a hammer than a nail"

is that red natural or did you do something to it...
also.. why the blocking.. for the bench?

That is the natural color of Madera when it is rained on. Look at the color under the roof, it is lighter.
You have to block the bench because Trex is so soft. I frame and block Trex 12"o.c."Rather be a hammer than a nail"

Bob,
Glad to see you back posting some pictures again, the deck looks great.
Mind if I steal that privacy fence design? I have a customer now that is looking for something similiar?
You may use any of my ideas Cagiv. There is no patent on them. The fence is made with 2x6 rails, 7/8"x4" fence boards, 1 1/2" privacy lattice, held in by ripping 1"x2" in half making 3/4" strips to stapple the lattice in place.
The arbor crosses are 3"x8", rails 3"x6", and 3"x3" top crosses"Rather be a hammer than a nail"

Bob: I still think you are the best at decks. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Stan,

Forgive my complete ignorance, is this deck framed with cedar? It looks like a redwood....Great pics, great craft. Thank you for sharing.
Hi, I have a dumb question, I am engineer by day (ME) and just finishing my deck/ gazebo(ok88% done), I used pt framing w/ ipe on top, and I used all ss fasteners AND joist hangers, I see no joist hangers , so I assume toe naing ect. did I waste the $550 for ss joist hangers, when do they make sense vs just naling like this deck? thanks, Dave
my guess...where the joists hang from, they get hangers... i.e. the ledgerbut everywhere else, they aren't hanging, they sit on top of beams.
the beams proivde the bearing, and no need for hangers.just my guess.. i dont do this stuff for a livin...

He has hangers off the ledger. The joists look to be all one length. Hangers can be seen here:

Good Eye Nick!
The new code is pressure blocking on top of all the beam runs, so it probably looks like we're not using hangers, but we do use stainless hangers on the ledger plus stailess flashing."Rather be a hammer than a nail"
Bob
new code is pressure blocking on top of all the beam runs
I assume this is a local requirement, as there appears to be no such requirement in my neighborhood. Or maybe it's not enforced and we just don't know any better.
We usually block the ends and midspan, but rarely does either fall on the beam. No BI has yet to mention it.

Hi Dave,
Nick already answered your question......
And by the way there are no dumb questions here....
I think what you are seeing is the joists sittin on the beam run. Those are 20' long 2"x8" joists that are pressure blocked on top of a 4"x8" beam run.
Stainless is the way to go and no you did not waste your money. Your deck will stand the test of time....."Rather be a hammer than a nail"
Bob
Thanks Alex,
The deck is framed with doug fir treated with ACQ (alkaline copper quat) thus the red tint.
I like the color but boy are these pieces of wood heavy.
ACQ is 96% copper, like the wood wasn't heavy enough when they took it out of the pond. "Rather be a hammer than a nail"
Bob
Love the color of the deck!!! Did you use nails or bolts to hold the railing post? looks like nails from your pic. Also, do your beam post just sit on concrete blocks?
The rail posts are boxed framed 2x8 with 3 1/4" hot dipped galvanized nails only, no bolts. Once they're all fastened together with rail sections they don't move.
The beam posts do just sit on pier blocks that are set in holes 2'x2'x 1'deep filled with concrete. Our frost line here in the Seattle area is only 8".

Beautiful Bob! Nice to see you poking your head back in here. Was it a busy summer?
Mike Maines
Thanks Mike,
Yes it was a very busy summer. I'll post more pics later. right now I have to leave to start framing another 1200 sq. ft. saddle tan trex deck.
Take care!"Rather be a hammer than a nail"
